First, a few old notes from the October mini in Hanover, items not publicized in the DFTD by that voracious news gatherer, Scoop Herman. Bill and Jean Hotaling had just returned two days earlier from an exciting three-week trip to China. Despite some jet lag, they gave up their house and yard (and indoor plumbing) for the boxlunch gathering that preceded the Cornell game. Bill also conducted a walking tour of the Dartmouth Medical Center for ten of us on Friday. He and Jean are regular volunteers at the amazing, modern center, whose decorative use of original paintings, quilts and stained glass were of particular interest to Rosemarie Brown (Don's wife), StewartBroberg, and Pat Stillman. Jake Gidney was also impressed, having come all the way from Reno, Nev., where he still works five and a half days a week in his own CPA business. Donand Jane Hanks, smiling as ever, also took the tour, though Don was dragging a little from his recent work as a substitute tractor operator on his dairy farm.
I enjoyed sitting next to Joe Wilkes at the game. Joe came up from Annapolis, Md., where he works as a parttime consultant in architecture. He taught that subject at a Maryland college for 14 years when he had his own business in Washington, D.C.
Karl and Catherine Blume were at the mini. He's finally been able to sell his dental practice in Stamford, Conn., and spend more time at his winter address in Port Charlotte, Fla. (See you at the Sarasota mini on March 31, Karl!)
At the class meeting, presided over by President Don Stillman, several noteworthy reports were made. Steve Winship announced that classmates had recendy taken out $12 9,000 in Life Income Trusts (LIF), bringing our total to nearly $1.7 million. He indicated that the donors of LlF's, annuities offered by the College, and straight bequests can now specify any activity that they wish to benefit.
Also at the meeting, Head Agent JohnWhite reported that the class had only fallen $2,000 short of its assigned goal. Participation by '41s was 66 percent versus a College average of 58 percent.
Jupe Lewis didn't make the mini, but he phoned in October to report the demise of his sidekick at The Dartmouth, Fred Begole. Jupe now lives in Stamford, Conn., where he retired 15 years ago after a long career in administrative and personnel work with the United Nations organization in N. Y.C., Geneva, Palestine, and Japan.
A long letter from Wes Harper in Cheshire, Conn., carried the good news that he and Jane are enjoying retirement with such activities as hiking, biking, golf, and tennis. Wes worked for Revere Corp. in Wallingford for many years, and he and Jane spent their vacations traveling in Europe and loving it. Now their trips are shorter, visiting four grown daughters and their families on the eastern seaboard.
