The August edition of the Valley News had quite an article about the new state of-the-art irrigation system which has been installed at the Hanover Country Club. The Rainbird Maxi-5 system, "which allows virtually automatic watering of all 18 holes from tee to green, is believed to be the only one of its kind in the Twin States and one of the first in New England. It was made possible by a donation from Robert T.Keeler, who, with his brother, Thomas T. Keeler '43, gave $675,000 plus additional monies for what is termed the Golf Court Maintenance Endowment." The new system was dedicated on August 19, but had been operating effectively during the very dry summer, providing green grass in all areas of the course. I tried to get a last-minute telephone interview with Bob but he was—where else? out playing golf. His wife, Peggy, was kind enough to give me some information on the project. Bob had been in consultation with club pro Bill Johnson for many months before the actual installation was started in October 1994. And it is Bob's hope that this great facility will attract more alumni to return to Hanover to play, and perhaps make contributions of their own in support of the College in one way or another.
Had a telephone chat with DuneNewell, who has had some serious health problems but is making good progress. He credits his wife, Phyllis, with doing a great job of helping him keep his spirits up.
Also called Bob Fernald, who was recovering from a serious back operation. When I talked with him he was feeling pretty good and was hoping to be ready to attend the Cornell game on September 30. Bob was telling me about the influx of small animals—chipmunks, squirrels, etc.—in his area, and while we were talking he looked out the window and saw a flock of nine wild turkeys which had moved into the neighborhood, apparently in search of food. Which reminds me that Bob hoped to get a preliminary report on the food for our 60th Reunion before he and Tanna left for Florida around November 1. Turkey, maybe!
