As Jean and I share in the return of our boys to school this fall (one to Dartmouth, one to Princeton, and one a senior at Belmont Hill School who is totally immersed in the college search process), we are extremely impressed with and also energized by the excitement and atmosphere of college campus life, particularly at the start of an academic year. Among the students, it is "old home week," renewing old acquaintances while condensing three months of summer into a 30-second sound bite.
Many of you are sharing the same expe- rience with your children. Once the car is unloaded, we are expected to get lost. But the entire scene is a lot of fun. We would love to hear news and sound bites from you about your children, their college experiences, and your observations of the whole process. It certainly conjures up some memories, and probably some stories and comparisons with our undergraduate years.
In an earlier column I mentioned that Bruce Wagner had been appointed vice president of communications for ITT Automative of Auburn Hills, Mich. I subsequently came across a news release providing more detail. It states that Bruce will be responsible for corporate communications for both domestic and international markets. Prior to joining ITT Automotive, he was executive vice president of Ross Roy Communications and before that senior vice president and general manager for Grey Advertising. After Dartmouth Bruce earned a master's degree in international business administration from the Wharton School. Bruce and his wife, Betsy, reside with their two children in Birmingham, Mich.
From Davis, Calif., comes word that Peter Dale has been named vice president for undergraduate studies at the University of California, Davis. In this capacity Peter is responsible for campus-wide leadership and coordination of undergraduate academic programs and serves as the principal liaison between the administration and the faculty on undergraduate program matters. Peter joined the U.C. Davis faculty in 1980.
Exeter Academy has recently named Jack Herney dean of the faculty. Jack has been an instructor of history at Exeter since 1968. He served as chairman of that department prior to assuming his present position. After Dartmouth Jack received his master of arts in teaching from Harvard in 1966.
Neil Grossman of Fairfield, Conn., has been appointed general manager of Reed Exhibition Co.'s Mexican division. Neil has been with Reed since 1983, previously serving as vice president and general manager of the Boston division that produced trade and consumer shows. He will be responsible for overseeing the sales, marketing, operations, and strategic planning of the company's Mexican trade shows. After Dartmouth he attended Harvard Business School. Neil, if you need any help with "shows" or "exhibitions," I have some terrific candidates from our own 30th Reunion! Congratulations to Bruce, Peter, Jack, and Neil.
Finally, I am delighted to report that Hank Amon and Karen Kolodny (Amon) are the proud parents of a baby daughter, Carly Coffin Amon. Everyone is fine and rumor has it that Hank is at least as adept at Carly's care (diapers, etc.) as he is at structuring an international project finance transaction for White and Case. Congratulations to Hank and Karen!
Hope to see you at our mini in October.
