The hawk has swooped down on the Big Apple. Winter is here. A long winter (almost nuclear) with no countdown for pitchers and catchers, yet. Kudos to one of the ex-South Fayers, Bill Schlesinger, who received a James B. Duke chair at Duke University for distinguished professor in botany and geology. Slush officially became Dr. Slush in 1976 with his Ph.D. at Cornell and then went to UC-Santa Barbara until 1980 when he realized he was not laid-back (readers are welcome to fill in this parenthetical) and went to Duke, where he tutored Christian Laettner on how to communicate with referees.

Ex-track teammate Peter Gambaccini was recently published with the release of TheNew York City Marathon: Twenty-Five Years (Rizzoli International Publications Inc.). It is a year-by-year account of the N.Y. Marathon, including both the leaders and the unusual runners, with anecdotes as only Peter could tell them. It includes color photos, a foreward by Grete Waitz, a preface by Fred Lebow, text by Peter, and editing by Charles Miers. The book caught some nice ink in The New York Times when it was released coincidental with the marathon in November 1994, and it became an instant, coffee-table best-seller among marathoners. Peter added the note, "Glad I got my marathon book out before Potter,Shirey, and Cullen. Buy one, then buy two. Alert all '72s, especially Henry 'Hank'Moore." I must add this from the biographical notes in the press release about Peter: "He lives less than a mile from the finish line and wants to marry marathoner Uta Pippig."

I received a really nice letter from MartyStaff, who is also in N.Y.C. The ex-Alpha Theta bro (and fellow Southwest Long Islander) catches us all up on the past 22 years. "I married Robin Joseph in June 1975. She is a Goucher graduate and is a ballet dancer. She is currently president of CCDE, a non-profit dance company which finds and funds emerging dancers and choreographers. Her company performs throughout the Northeast. I joined Bloomingdales in 1973 and stayed for seven years. When I left I was vice president of women's apparel. I joined Polo Ralph Lauren to become vice president of sales and marketing and stayed for seven years. For the last six years I have worked with Calvin Klein. I am currently president of Calvin Klein Cos." (The itch should be starting in the next year.) Robin and Marty split time between N.Y.C. and upstate Clayton. They breed golden retrievers, hunt, fish, and hang out. He collects antique wood boats and still loves fast cars. He would love to hear from classmates, particularly Vic Stibolt, John Kugler, TomChristian, and Ross Miller.
