On Sunday, October 22, 1995, the class of '58 lost one of its dear honorary members. Ida "Ma"McAul life died at the age of 104. "Ma," as she was known to her "boys" held a special place in the hearts of Dan Palant and John Kavanagh. Coincidentally, October 22 marked the end of the Homecoming weekend in Hanover and both Dan and John were in town for the festivities of Dartmouth Night and the Colgate game. Upon hearing that Ma had suffered a stroke Dan and John were able to have one last visit with her before she died. As Dan commented, "All the 'boys' are so glad she was a part of our lives." John noted, "Ma made sure we made it through four years of Dartmouth with our feet on the ground."

George Washington University has named Ed Carress interim dean of the Columbian School in addition to his position as a professor of chemistry at the university. Since 1965 Ed has taught chemistry as well as serving as associate and assistant dean of GW's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Then, just to make sure that he doesn't find himself with some idle time on his hands, he is the university faculty representative to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

The 1995 annual report of the Will to Excel campaign brought the news that two of our classmates had made significant pledges. Bill Allan made one which will endow a fellowship at the Thayer School while Don Mccree made his to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Venture Fund. As the campaign enters it final months, see if you can't make a significant pledge as well.

Let's hope that as this column reaches you another winter will be history. Wonder if any '99s disappeared into the mud this year? Next month the admissions office will be sending out acceptances for the class of 2000. These past 42 years have certainly flown by.
