Books by two members of the class have been published recently. Both appear to be serious contributions to the literature in their disciplines. Ron Fagin is the co-author of Reasoning About Knowledge, which has been published by the MIT Press. According to reviewers it is the first book to provide a general discussion of approaches to reasoning about knowledge and its applications to distributed systems, artificial intelligence, and game theory. The book is the result of eight years of work. Ron is now manager of the Foundation of Computer Science Group at the IBM Alameda Research Center.
Russ Hoverman is tie author of a new work, The Landscape Within: An Inquiry onthe Structure of Morality, published by Peter Lang. One reviewer commented that, "Russell Hoverman combines a physician's knowledge of the body and human suffering with a philosopher's quest for the meaning of the moral life in this sensitive and incisive account of issues in modern medicine. Readers will profit greatly from this inquiry into the meaning of human sympathy and altruism, and come away with a deepened understanding of the moral dimensions of being human." Russ has made a major shift away from pure clinical medicine in Austin to running the business of medicine. He is now the managed care medical director of Physical Reliance Network, overseeing over ISO physicians in more than 50 locations throughout Texas and the Southwest.
Tom Rath seems to thrive on controversy. The press recently covered the role of Tom's lobbying firm in working for U.S. English as it supports legislation to make English the official language of New Hampshire. Apparently some Frenchspeaking citizens and Dartmouth's John Rassias took issue with the law, giving an issue to the local papers. Also continuing to get press coverage is Fred Geis singer for his new role as president and CEO at American General Mortgage and Land Development.
Remember to save April 27 for '67 on Broadway. Bill Yaggy has planned another great evening at Jerry Zak's new production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Wayto the Forum. Send me your news.
