The usual winter class executive committee meeting and mini reunion took place this year on February 7-9. Once again, kudos and special thanks to the Hanover locals for their hard work, their interest in the class, and especially their friendly presence: the Matlesses, Taylor and Tucks. Other "almost locals" whom it was good to see were the Lindells, DougSmiths, McCabes, Nichols, Kilmarxs, Carpenters, Eldridges, Lindenthals, Medlicotts, Harneds (soon to be in Norwich), and Betsy Pinkham (who, incidentally, is in fine fettle following a stroke a few months ago). Filling out the roster from a bit further away were the Ruggles, Harlows, Newkirks,Gleasons, McSorley, and Kents.
In addition to dinners at the Hanover Inn on Friday and Saturday evenings, a highlight was the wine-cheese-and-soup lunch at the Kilmarx's in Lyme on Saturday, fast becoming something of a tradition; five delicious soups were served up by Mary Kilmarx and Jill Harned. In the afternoon many enjoyed the beautiful sunny and warm day by cross-country skiing or downhill at nearby Dartmouth Skiway. The next mini will be October 31-November 2. Come on up!
Didja ever wonder... Who first looked at an artichoke and decided there was anything inside worth the trouble to get to? Or a pineapple?... Why it is we put a man on the moon before anyone thought of squeeze-bottle catsup?... Why everyone in your city forgets how to drive at the first appearance of a snowflake?...Why people think an elevator shows up quicker if the button is pushed twice?... Four out of five dentists surveyed recommend sugarless gum. Did the fifth guy say, "Rot your teeth out, what the hell do I care?"
Charlie and Dodie Abbe are living it up again this winter on the west coast of Florida. They plan a month in Paris and other parts of Europe in April, returning to New Hampshire on May 1.
You may have noticed that I'm not much on pushing the Alumni Fund in this column; don't think it's the place for it. However, it is that time and I thought I'd pass along a personal note. I always earmark my contribution "in memorium" to Bob Day, who was my classmate from first grade through Dartmouth and who, next to my wife, is the best friend I ever had.
An item in the Chattanooga (Tenn.) Free Press reports that Scotty Probasco was awarded an honorary doctor of civil law degree by the University of the South. He's been active in banking since Wharton School of Finance, having served as chairman of the board at Sun Trust and president of several others. He sits on the boards of numerous civic, charitable, and business organizations.
Conrail Inc., the Philadelphia-based railroad company, was much in the news recently with its proposed merger with CSX Corp. and a hostile takeover effort by Norfolk Southern. Roger Hillas is one of a very distinguished group of directors of Conrail.
Have a good spring.
