Today is Father's Day. Today a class column is due. Today is Susannah (Gaylord) Stoll's birthday. Many reasons to celebrate, yet a nagging question remains: When should I stop using parenthesized maiden names? Ignoring that, I'm refocusing on Fathers. Happy Father's Day to all dads, including mine, class of 1959. Happy Father's Day to me, since Cindy and I had a little boy two weeks ago. Brady MacManus was born May 27, just in time to savor the Red Wings sweep, and is doing great. We like him.
HFD to Chris Mulligan, new father of Leila Day Mulligan, born February 17. Mulls just took a new job with Salomon Brothers doing something I guess. HFD to Aloke Mandal, father of Paul Kumar Mandal February 21, 1996, and Juliette Caulet Mandal May 4. Speaking of Aloke (and weren't we all), he is finishing his chief resident year in general surgery at Johns Hopkins and, starting in July, will be one of the assistant chiefs of service in general surgery, which allows him general, thoracic, and vascular surgical privileges. Aloke is married to Fabienne Marsh, an author of several novels and children's books, and lives in Baltimore. Call him if you're in Baltimore and your thorax hurts.
HFD to Jim Meyer. I don't know Jim, but I know his wife, June Palumbo Meyer. Thanks to June for a nice note on their life in Darien, Conn. June and Jim are happy parents of three boys: Philip, 7; Christopher, 4; and Will, now 5 months. Despite being immersed in a life of mac & cheese, June has found time to begin a master's in social work at Columbia. The aforementioned Susannah Stoll told me that Carol Jo (Miner) Snyder recently had her second son, Adam, so HFD to her husband, Bruce.
Though, to my knowledge, not a father, yet still worthy of mention is Josh Alwitt. I met Josh at a party in February, only 186 months after our matriculation at Dartmouth. Josh is working in systems consulting for Sapient Corporation in N.Y.C. and has done a lot of other interesting work over the last 10 years, though I can't exactly remember all the details except to say that he spent a lot of time overseas. He was at the party with his humorous and alliterative girl friend, Peg Pike. Also saw Chris Gagnon at this same party. Gags had just left McKinsey to start up his own consulting firm (at least I think that's what I heard over all of Jim Newman's yelling) and still loves living in Basking Ridge, N.J., with his wife, Caitlyn '89, and daughter, Sara.
Did You know Dept. Seems our own Scott Erdman is actually the creative genius behind the Miller Lite "Dick" commercials. Perhaps this explains why he has not been in touch. Mikey Lehman has joined the Coast Guard Reserve in Northern California, perhaps to get a free haircut. John Holleran was seen squiring Jackie Joyner Kersee around Richmond recently. Jackie plays for the professional women's basketball team there. Perhaps John was acting as "counsel."
From the "It's Only Interesting To Me Department" Early Happy Birthday to Nancy Byrne. I don't really know Nancy, but in my quest to supply cutting edge news, I was looking through the class roster and noticed that she was born on the exact day I was. Nancy, wherever you are, Happy Birthday. To the rest of you, please write, call, just send some news. In the words of Madeline, "That is all there is. There is no more."
