We have no reports of the loss of any classmates since our last. Hallelujah! We had a brief note from Don Lawder, who can be reached at B.P. 85, Bamako Mali, West Africa F1356. We didn't think it possible when we directed one of those '39 Happy Birthday cards to this address. But behold, in very good time a nice note came back and a clipping from the June 1 Nation Magazine, which featured a review piece titled "Mali High," which reviewed Don's book, Fishing In the Sky (Permanent Press), which began with letters home. Don had been sent to landlocked, impoverished Mali by the Peace Corps 15 years ago, and remains there to this day, surrounded by an adopted family of kids. We are passing this bit on to Peter Cardozo, so it is possible that you will have read the details before seeing the above.
We would like to throw in another WELL DONE to Jim Corner, Bill Tomkins, and their merry crew for hitting our goal again this past June. Year after year these guys do a fantastic job for the College, and the class should be rightfully proud. As Jim pointed out in a recent green card to me, "I would like to mention all those widows and other family members who support the fund each year. This year it was 38 different families."
While on the subject of kudos for supporting the College, we have long wanted to mention a few names of guys who have generously supported Tuck, Thayer, or the Med School over the past years. Some of these men also support the undergraduate college, and others leave it all with the affiliated schools, but all deserve a mention. Here's a list: Ned Bayrd, Clem Burnap, Frank Cline, Bob Clymer, Colby Coggswell, Bill Conway, Bob Elkins, Bob Howe, Bill Hyde, Dick Storrs, Buzz Waters, and Ed Wells. The class of 1939 thanks them and others who have remembered the affiliated schools each year.
Remember the 60th coming up Monday, June 14, through Wednesday, June 16. Start making plans. There can't be too many left in which to spend some time with old friends.
