This neopyhyte secretary is still trying to get used to typing a column 2-1/2 months prior to publication! In this age of instant communication the DAM'S pony express time schedule seems a bit bizarre. Oh well, it is a lovely August morning on my Cape Cod deck as I hunt and peck this report. Bill Maeck weighed in recently from Sun City stating that personal matters prevented his attendance at our 5 sth, but he hopes to be east this fall for a Hanover visit as well as to see old friends from his Connecticut days. Is playing golf a couple of times a week (no handicap info) and has minimum aches and pains. Boon Atkinson remains active in a Springfield, Mass., law practice; plans to hit the ski slopes again this winter despite a last winter ski accident resulting in a broken collarbone. Boone left Hanover early—May of 1942—and writes that his silence relative to Dartmouth is a "non-bitter lack of interest in the institution." Stan Calder called from Florida recently to say he is still chasing the little white ball, but scores now are more often in the eighties than the seventies. Stan, who had a second bypass a year ago, missed the 55th despite urging from his former roommate, Henry Keck, to put in an appearance. A dated piece from the Miami Herald April 1, 1998, rescued from Paul Randall's files referred to Warren Preece, former editor of the Encyclopedia Britannica and his talk on "The Conditions of World Peace." I'm indebted to Bob Krumm for information on Charlie "Chic" Webb, whose obit was in the October issue of DAM. Recently had a phone chat with Jim Elleman, who still tries to maintain contact with his junior year Lebanon Street roommates. Jim keeps active with philanthropic responsibilities, particularly Morristown Hospital.
A recent letter from the Alumni Council capsuled the major issues that body's College Relations Group discussed with the Trustees earlier this year. They are: ROTC (retain while challenging the government's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy) and alcohol abuse (shifting more responsibility to the students). The letter also noted that the perception that the Alumni Fund is losing participants is incorrectalumni participation is actually up two percentage points since 1994. The Trustees remain committed to the need-blind admissions policy but may revise the current standards for financial aid.
Unfortunately, there is one death to report this month R. Dugald "Duke" Pearson. Our sympathies to his family.
Come on, guys, I need more input!
