First, the fall mini-reunion dates are October 2-3, with Bill Fitzhugh as chairman. Dick Hube tells me mini attendance suffered a "major decrease" of over 25 percent a year ago, "23 fewer attendees" not a desirable trend. The reunion dates, by the way, are ten days after the college installs Jim Wright as president. More from Hube: Dick was in Florida with his daughter and looked up Duke Mills, who sent regards to the third-floor occupants of Topliff freshman year. (I was on the first floor, Duke, remember me?) Jack Donahue called from W. Roxbury, Mass., seeking address for exroommate Norris Nims (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.). Jack is retired from his law practice and "living quiedy" with wife Marjorie. Hal Ritter and Phyllis after 29 years have given up on Newbury, Vt., for the "low country" of So. Carolina, new address 1596 Lagoon Villa, Hilton Head, 29938. Myra and Bill Mathers changed their annual fiesta in Sutton, Vt., from July to June 26, attendance is slowing there too. Doc Beach sends word of a luncheon with Bill Adams at the Publick House in Sturbridge, Mass. (halfway between Bill's home in Arlington and Doc's in Simsbury, Conn.). The topic, of course, was golf. Bill, Doc, and champ Willy Ogg were roommates, and Doc's son designs golf courses. Bill Gahagan says he is envious of my "background" while he has been "such a gypsy."
My first e-mail (note address below) is from Dave Smith's widow, Eleanor, in California. I lack space to quote her message in its entirety, but essentially she said the widows program is very active. Eleanor's recent contacts included Tia Short (Bill), Monte Sereno, Calif.; Clarissa Cage (Walter), Geneva and elsewhere; Adele Feingold (Bill), Scottsdale, Ariz.; Anna Williams (John), Lakeland, Fla.; Jean Sewall (Charles), Palm Harbor, Fla.; Edwina Parsons (Sanford), and her old Mills (before Wellesley) roommate, Babs Bankart (Reg). More atout this program who is responsible, names, etc. next month.
Trudie and Ralph Specht hosted a luncheon in Sarasota in April (Rey Moulton, Ken Webster, Bob Richter, Bill Russell, plus wives and guests) and Ed Gerson had a gathering in Carlsbad, Calif., with Lou Bookheim, Put Kingsbury, and Walt Kadlec. And from Battle Ground, Wash., Jack Dodge sends word that his oldest son, "lucky to get through high school," has made it big on Wall St.; his oldest daughter married a schoolteacher and is "feeding at the public trough"; his middle daughter wed "Hercules and moved to Cyprus"; and his youngest girl teaches "in the state pen." As for Jack, "I'm a retired widower and tired after 30 years as a country editor."
In this and later DAM issues will be notices on the passing of Bill Moran, Walter Cage, Fred Mebel, Clyde Foster, and Hank McLister. Also leaving us are widows Tommy Karlen (Sven) and Carolyn Dorsey (Steve). Carolyn died March 10, 1998, in Washington, D.C, 30 years to the day after Steve.
