Al Sutton's letter of July 12 included his asking how the number of the class who matriculated contrasted with the most recent Alumni Office listing of living members. These are, respectively, 626 as stated in our Freshman Green Book, and 97 by my count as of Aug. 7, 1999. Al also reported: plugging along with golf once a week, only nine holes and his scores moving in the wrong direction; doing a lot of reading of biographies, history and novels; frequent visits to the exercise room in his retirement community in Winchester, Va., in bad weather. All things con- sidered, he believes he had a good life, and wonders how the longevity of our classmates compares with other groups of the same age. This might be something you computer experts could obtain from the Internet.
Regarding us geezers, I'm predicting that we'll have 70 classmates, each of whom will be at least 90 years of age on Jan. 1, 2001.
Page 1-A of The Wall Street Journal of July 20, 1999, reported on electric utility matters in the drought-stricken area of the northeast corner of Brazil, including a brief description of the underground power house at Paulo Afonso on the Sao Francisco River. Not mentioned in that report was the transaction wherein your scribe in 1957 sold the 150,000-horsepower hydraulic turbine for the first generating unit in that power house. Got around in those days.
