What better way to start a column than to be guided by our "spiritual compass.' Read Heydt sends greetings from Clearwater, Florida, where he is serving as interim rector of St. John's until next June. Looking toward retirement, Read may take one more full-time interim assignment before taking off the robes," and re-connecting with classmates. His son, Charlie, is teaching English in Kyoto, Japan, and younger son, Michael, is entering senior year at Colgate—"one last year of tuition payments!" Old roommate JoeWaftle worth lives nearby and Read enjoys visiting with Joe and Dottie.

As we read about the terrible fires in the Southwest, our own Dr. Bob Worthirigton was feeling the heat. Living in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Bob reports that the fires got within 150 yards of their ranch, twice, before stopping. Bob has reverted back to what he was doing in the '6os and '7os, i.e., collecting firearms. He also bought a '67 Jeep CJS (like his first) and restored it to original condition—one of some 20 Jeeps he has rebuilt and continues to work as an FAA safety counselor, giving aviation safety seminars around the Southwest.

The "Honorary Mayor of Peterborough, New Hampshire"—l haven't heard that well deserved accolade for awhile—Dave Gavin was recently inducted into the first class of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. Joining the likes of Bob Cousy, Tom Heinsohn, Patrick Ewing and Julius Erving, Dave does our class proud. Hard to believe that 1959 was the last year that Dartmouth won the Ivy League in basketball!

A short note from Roger Condit living the good life in Farmington, Maine. Believing that a healthy nation is a strong nation, Roger has spent much time and effort working with the Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee.

Retirement often leads to volunteer work and Wayne French has joined his town's ambulance squad. In order to become a certified emergency medical technician, Wayne had to take a national exam—claims he hasn't studied so hard since OCS in Newport! Wayne and Joan are also grandparents for a second time. Since both grandchildren live nearby, they are fortunate to see them frequently.

The spring meeting of the Alumni Council honored "two of our finest," as Dick Jaeger was the featured honored alum on the occasion of his retirement as athletic director. President Wright spoke glowingly of Dick's work in both athletics and admissions. Never announced in advance, the dinner is a traditional occasion for honoring an alum who has been outstanding over the years—who else but our own John Ferries. In Johns acceptance remarks he spoke enthusiastically about DPCS and its role in bringing students and alums together. A great night for '59!

Richard Pearson, professor of counseling and human services in Syracuse University's School of Education, was honored with title "professor emeritus" at the university's recent May commencement. Richard joined the SU faculty in 1965, and has authored numerous articles focusing on group work, life transitions and counseling in rural settings. When the sun goes in...the shovels come out.
