The New York mini-reunion dinner held April 26 brought 27 of us together at the usual place, Rene Pujol on West 51 st. The list includes: Nels Armstrong, Charlie Collier, Ken Davidson, Greg Fell, Tony Fitzpatrick, Mike Furey, Mike Hannigan, Tom Jackson, Thorn Jenness, Charles "CJ" Johnston, Rob Joy, Bill Kennedy, Ramon Marks, Mike Maynard, Tom McGuane, Don O'Neill, Michael Press, Tom Price, George Rountree, Pete Ruegger, Craig Shallcross, John Shanahan, John Shapleigh, Pete Webster, Scott Wiley, Dick Wooster, and Steve Zrike. Pictures are available on the web at .
The evening produced one surprising personal reunion: After more than 25 years, classmates CJ Johnston and Ramon Marks saw each other for the first time since their days together in the Foreign Study Program in Freetown, Sierra Leone. They shared a number of war stories about their adventures together in the bars and night clubs of Freetown—stories which, unfortunately, cannot be repeated in this column (I know; I was sitting at the same table!).
Bob Mustard "recently returned from my second political trip to Washington, D.C. The first was our 'spring break' back when Parkhurst was taken over. Having no classes to attend, I recall taking off to 'make a difference' in D.C. with Doug Boyink. This time the purpose was to join up with friends in our non-profit citizen's organization, We The People. We canvassed every legislator's office and met with several congressmen and dozens of legislative assistants to lobby for Clean Money and campaign finance reform. For a sample of our political rhetoric, visit ."
Scott Mitchell shared the podium earlier this year with Colin Powell to announce a joint partnership with America's Promise (Powell's organization to aid American youth at risk) and the Envelope Manufacturer's Foundation, which Scott leads. The foundation has developed a series of paper-based experiences called "classroom in a can," which it jointly supports with the Smithsonian and the U.S. Postal Service. Scott's day job is as president of Mackay Envelope in Minneapolis.
Ron Olsen's son "Tomo is a senior and Teru a sophomore at Lake Washington High School. Teru will be competing for the state doubles tennis championship in a few weeks, and Tomo, who is in the thick of varsity baseball, will be off to Washington State University this fall. 'Hanover is too cold.' Double quote, from both boys! Masami and I are traveling a lot, usually to play in airline tennis tournaments (she works for American). Went to Santiago in March (got to use ancient Freshman Spanish skills), Salzburg in June, and plan to be at Waterville Valley in late September. Hope to make a call on Hanover then."
Sally and Don O'Neill are very happy to announce the arrival of Max (Maxwell Jon William O'Neill), d.b.a. "the Maxaroo," who has been with us since February, when he was six weeks old. The adoption process in Connecticut is agonizingly slow and intrusive, but should be concluded by early fall. Big brother Donny 9 is thrilled with his new buddy and glad to have some of the parental scrutiny redirected. Freemont the dog, our big, goofy golden retriever, has assumed die role of protector and nanny. Max thinks there's nothing more fun than Freemont licking his face and our attempts at intervention are not very effective.
And Ann and Rob Sprinkle welcomed Andrew Leland Sprinkle into the world on May 14. "Sister Alice, now almost 3, is increasingly amused. Parents are sleepless, surrounded. Reinforcements are welcome." Considering all the '71 babies of late, it looks like the 30th Reunion is still going to need a toddler's section at the kid's tent!
