The past two months we bragged of the lack of deaths in the 1939 family. This month we are stunned by the list. George Patterson, September 21, 1999; Dave Dutcher November 3,1999; Bud Richardson, November 16, 1999; Bart Jones, November 25, 1999; Roy Middleworth January 1, 2000; and Ace Bailey, January 5,2000. Obits will be in a later issue. To add to the class grief, we report the deaths of Johnny Page's beloved wife, Ellen, on November 3,1999, and the late ColbyHowe's widow, Pat. This last from their granddaughter Marisa Howe '98.
On a more positive note, we have a Green Card from Elizabeth Bradley, Lou's widow, advising of her marriage on March 23, 1996, to Graham T. Hassard who has retired from Farrell Corp., the same company for whom Lou had worked. They live on Cape Cod summers, and in Naples, Fla., winters. They see Duke and Julie Lyon on the Cape, and keep in touch with Ted and Betty Wolfe in Spring Hill, Fla.
Meanwhile over on Sanible Island, Fla., Chuck and Betty Farnum have been enjoying the relaxed environment since 1988. Chuck goes on an annual canoe trip to Canada, and can generally be counted on to stop in at Hanover en route. He had a few nice things to say about my latest novel, which were appreciated.
Sam Dix reports that he got himself a new hip about a year ago, and has been walking rather nicely ever since. In 1998 Sam took a Dartmouth trip up the Danube from Hungary and down the Rhine to Holland. The Corners came south to Florida on the autotrain, to save Doris. She is recovering from stomach problems suffered this past fall. We had a nice e-mail from David Highmark lamenting, as do we all, the absence of his dad. He says he misses seeing his dad's name in this column.
"Thank you, all of dad's classmates—those who are still living and those who have joined dad. You all played a very special role in his life and as a result, played a very important role in the life of us three sons and Mom," he writes. A very nice thought. Dave has just been promoted by Northern Trust Bank to chairman and CEO in Arizona, after heading up the southwest Florida operation. Mother Peg is still wintering in Florida. May the April showers please your plants.
