In April Barry Grove brought the Manhattan Theatre Clubs production of Proof, a play by David Auburn, to Hurley's restaurant in N.Y.C. for a special performance following dinner. The Dartmouth Club of N.Y.C. hosted the event. Proof is a new play about a group of enigmatic young souls in search of the truth about a remarkable mathematical proof. The play premiered successfully at the Manhattan Theatre Club and is now playing on Broadway.

Mitch Kurz, who retired from Young & Rubicam in December 1998, is currently chairman and founder of Kurz and Friends, a consultancy to the professional services industry, with particular expertise in online and off-line integrated marketing. He is writing a book about his career titled Advertising—A Life? One Man's Journey fromSpic 'n'Span to the Platinum Card. Mitch is a member of the boards of trustees of Rheedlen Centers for Children and Families, New Visions for Public Schools and Teach for America. He and wife Sandy, along with their two sons, live in N.Y.C. and Connecticut. Mitch is an avid runner and has completed 17 marathons. He has not reported any knee or hip replacements.

Congressman Mike Capuano is a member of the House Committee on the Budget, which crafts the blueprint for the funding of all federal programs for the coming fiscal year.ltwarms my retired Marine Corps heart to read in the military press that Mike has proposed an innovative idea to use tax credits instead of pay raises, always a politically loaded issue, to boost military compensation.

Confirming my suspicion that the behavior of middle school-age children worldwide is guided by some cosmic force, teacher Wolfgang Pfahler writes from Vreden, Germany, that, while teaching part-time in the nearby Netherlands, the little dears sensed the limits of his Dutch language skills, "challenged [his] class control and exploited weak spots." Hereports "nooneinthe Netherlands wants to teach high school." Thank fully, we don't have that problem in the United States. Daughter Esther, a talented violist, finished her first year of study at the University of Amsterdam and will continue this fall at a German university. Son Joris, a high school student, is also an able musician and a handball player. Wife Els teaches physical education to adults.

I am sad to report the death of Robert Ariel in March in N.Y.C. At the time of his death Bob was an assistant professor of economics and finance at Baruch College, City University of New York. He had doctoral degrees in philosophy and in finance. Bob's obituary will appear in a future issue of the Alumni Magazine.

Three cheers for head agent Bob Smith, who led our 2001 Alumni Fund efforts to success early in the campaign. Reports out of Hanover in late March indicated that our class was among only seven of nearly 70 classes that had achieved 100 percent of its goal by that early date. Congratulations to all classmates who contributed to the effort as agents and as donors.

Class vice president Mark Harty sent me a 50 th birthday present in the form of news about our classmates. As a former class secretary, he feels my pain. Jeremy Smith lives in Jacksonville, Florida, where he is a senior executive with Gate Oil Cos. He and wife Martha have two children Brian at the University of Florida and Sara in high school. Larry Roberts, Mark reports, is a senior officer at a Boston-area bank. George Kidder splits his time between Boston and Charlottesville, Virginia. He is a partner in money management firm Beacon Management. George and wife Katherine have three children: Jordy in college in Colorado; Stuart in high school, where he is a basketball and baseball standout; and Mary Windom (Mark's goddaughter), also in high school.

How 'bout celebrating your 50th birthday and helping me avoid a mid-life crisis as class secretary by sending me your news? I imagine some of you observed your mid-century mark in special places and in unusual ways. If reports of your birthday festivities are printable, share them with us.
