Greetings from Provence. As one of the few Americans traveling abroad this year, I have the distinct pleasure of having much of the French countryside all to my bicycle and myself as I travel down roads that have been here since the Renaissance. The sheer age of the structures around me and the spectacular views in front of me, remind that there is a permanence to life—something I'm sure all of us feel comforted by in these ever-changing times. My aching muscles are a pleasant distraction from watching CNBC or staring at monthly stock and bond statements and wondering if someone left out a zero or two.
On a more provincial note, this months mailbag is actually rather full with news from a number of our classmates.
Don Drakeman writes that he had the pleasure of attending the wedding of Bob Beck and Maggie Ritchie in Bobs new hometown of Moores town, New Jersey. Bob is vice president and CIO at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, having combined his Dartmouth math and computing skills with an M.D. from John Hopkins. Don runs Medarex, a biotech company which he founded many years ago and, continuing the Dartmouth connection, Medarex was founded in part with licensed technology from Dartmouth. Dartmouth cashed in its equity in Dons company and realized a $67 million gain this past year! If only we could capture the credit for this in our class numbers we would surely set an all-time College record. Congratulations to Bob on his wedding and to Don for creating real value for Dartmouth.
Matt Dwyer continues his love of lacrosse with his new role as president and founding chairman of the members operating group of the Boston Cannons Major League lacrosse team. In his day job Matt is a principal at Spaulding & Slye Colliers, but this latest recognition is just one of many that Matt deserves for a lifetime commitment to the game of lacrosse. As the parent of a varsity lacrosse player at Middlesex, I have to admit that I've fallen in love with the game as well. So Matt, send me the season ticket application for the Cannons.
And Mifchel Olson, a trial lawyer specializing in medical malpractice and pharmaceutical litigation, has joined Casey, Gerry, Reed and Schenk, based in San Diego. Matt has a law degree from Stamford and a medical degree from the University of California at Berkley and is a leading specialist in pharmaceutical litigation. Best of luck, Mitch.
Cliff Ennico joins a number of '75 journalists with his recent appointment as the columnist for "Succeeding in Small Business," a weekly column that appears in more than 40 syndicated newspapers throughout the country. Cliff is a practicing lawyer and consultant to early-stage companies as well as an author for a number of law-related books. Congratulations, Cliff. On a side note, Cliff specifically requested that Chris Brown and Gil Hahn surface and report with news. So, Chris and Gil, send some news in or I'll have to make it up.
And finally, John Reed sent a picture from his recent wedding to Perry Ann Davis on June 8 in Booth bay Harbor, Maine. The picture had the following Greeners: John's brother, Matt, Tu'88; daughter Alison '06; dad Lansing '47; our own Steve Sargent and Garett Backman; Tom West '77; and Kent Hall '74 John's brother-in-law. Now that is a serious Dartmouth affair! Well done.
Well that's it for now. Time for me to get back on the bicycle. Keep the cards and letters coming. Enjoy the time we have on this planet.
