In the previous issue I was unable to say much about myself due to lack of space—l'd like that to always be the case, so keep your cards and e-mails coming! Until then, here's my own update: From '95 to '99 I taught at an international school in Lusaka, Zambia. Zambia was a politically stable central location for exploring southern Africa. During my time there I took advantage of the ample school vacations to travel in Namibia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. Putting my lion and elephant safaris behind me for the time being, I now live west of Seattle on the Kitsap Peninsula, where I teach algebra to eighth-graders. Here, my local safaris involve kayaking with orca whales and bald eagles.
In my summer travels I caught up with Wendy Pabich. Some time ago she celebrated the completion of her Ph.D. in environmental engineering by taking a six-week trip to Patagonia. As a scientist for the Environmental Defense Fund, Wendy now works on water quality issues in their oceans program. Living in Marblehead, Massachusetts, she continues to be an avid runner, skier and mountain biker (she's even considering mountain bike racing—at our age?!).
And this from our prolific classmate Charlie Wheelan: "I am writing with family news and, I must admit, a shameless marketing pitch. First the family: Leah (Yegian) and I are still living in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago with our two daughters, Katrina (4) and Sophie (2). Leah is the CEO of Beacon Analytics, a software consulting firm that she founded several years ago that has grown into a 25-plus-person operation. I'm still doing lots of things: writing for The Economist, teaching at Northwestern, and doing weekly radio commentary on Chicago Public Radio. Here's the commercial pitch: My book Naked Economics:Undressmgthe Dismal Science was published in September by WW. Norton. It's a fun, easy read—really! This is the book for any 'BB who never took Econ 1 and 2 (or has only a vague recollection of doing so)."
A note from David Kregenow informs us that he married Laura Busfield and that they have two boys, Ryan (8) and Noah (4). Laura is a Federal District Court clerk in Seattle and loves it. David is finishing his pulmonary and critical Care fellowship and "trying to decide what to do when I grow up."
Did anyone besides Mike Freidberg notice that Lanei Chapman appeared in the movie Rat Race playing Whoopie Goldbergs daughter?
As for the rest of you '88s, our readers would love to hear what you afe doing, especially if you have yet to submit any information about your life since June of 1988. It doesn't need to be long, just in English. I personally think it would be interesting to hear from classmates who are teaching or in education-related fields....
