First off, sorry about the silence last issue, both Molly, your class president, and myself, your trusty secretary, were out of town (in my case out of the country) when the column was due. Want to improve the columns? Come to reunion and get elected class secretary! When is reunion, you ask? Friday, June 13, to Sunday, June 15, 2003. As Molly put it in her e-mail to me: "Yes...one of our lucky days, Friday the 13th!" But in order to have a reunion, we need volunteers to help plan, organize and run the thing. (Note that it is "help" do those things, not do them all by your lonesome. As Kate Day puts it: "Not much time is needed, just the commitment to respond to small tasks.") Please contact Molly (see info below) or Kate (via e-mail: kday@ franklin.cisco.com or her work phone: 919- 392-2956) to volunteer.
In other news: Kevin Rosens wife, Linda, "ratted" on her hubby, sending us an article from the California Daily Journal (May 6) that lists the top 20 attorneys under the age of 40 in California. Kevin "slipped in just under the big 4-oh!" Kevin chairs the legal malpractice defense group at his law firm and has scored a number of notable notches in the win column. Kevin and Linda have been married for 10 years and have three children: Alexandra (8), Nicole (7) and Kyle (4). They live in Manhattan Beach, California. Linda concluded her e-mail saying: "I know Kevin is looking for ward to seeing everyone for your 20th anniversary (Secretary's Note: 19th!) from Dartmouth." Reunion is clearly on everybody's, and not just your class officers', minds.
Newspaper coverage of the class of '84 continued in the Valley News in August. David Hooke was featured in an article on the opening of the new library in the town of Vershire. David is president of VerShare, a volunteer organization founded to foster a stronger sense of community in this small Vermont town. VerShare was instrumental in opening the library—raising money, finding book donations and providing a location for the library in Vershire's historic Church-Orr House. The library also got a boost from the Robert Arthur Hooke Memorial Book Fund, named for the infant son of David and wife Kathy(Roy) '85, who died in the fall of 2001. As David put it, the books in the library "will live here in his memory." Our condolences to David and Kathy, along with our congratulations for ensuring that such a worthwhile project could come to life.
Moving down the coast (East Coast, of course) the East Providence Post reported that Matthew Lopes Jr. and his sister, Laurie '87, were inducted into the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame in June as part of the 2002 Rhode Island class. Inductees must have not only excelled in athletics and academics, but must also have used their scholastic and sports experience to "make a extraordinary contribution to society". A lawyer, Matty has served on a number of boards, including the Rhode Island chapter of the American Lung Association and the Providence Community Mediation Center. Congratulations!
Even further south in D.C., the NationalJournal profiled the Nichols-Dezenhall Communications Management Group founded by Erik Dezenhall and his partner Nick Nicholls. The public relations firm defends clients, usually corporate types, against allegations of controversial behavior—such as polluting or producing faulty products—using rather controversial and definitely hard-ball tactics. Erik claims that his clients must "either be repentant or unjustly accused—not simply in need of a cover-up." So I guess Enron, World Com, ImClone, at. al. need not apply.
That's my word limit—please send news (not necessarily the kind that makes the paper!) and please contact Molly or Kate if you can help with reunion.
