I hope that you have enjoyed a fun-filled summer 2002 with many lazy, hazy, crazy days to enjoy yourself, wherever the summer months found you. Surprisingly, several classmates spanning the globe found me so I actually have some news, direct from several sources. As follow-up from last column "Baby Hartman Levy" has been named—Catherine "Cate" L. Hartman Levy—born to Valerie Hartman Levy and husband Jeff on April 18. Cate already has a few playmates for the class of 2023 (is my math right?!) as Scott McDonald and wife Susan added a third boy to their clan in April as well—lan Seamus Ford McDonald (lots of surnames floating around in that one, eh?). Scott wrote in from Chicago, where he is CFO for Strive Group, a business that designs and manufactures point of purchase displays for companies, mostly consumer goods companies. And arriving pretty in pink also in April 2002 was Haley Kathryn, born to Jennifer Gabler and husband Stephen. Haley joins 5-year-old brother Alex, as their clan relocated to Westport, Connecticut, this summer. Jenny mentioned that a bunch of '85s gathered in N.Y.C. in February for a girls' weekend, among them: Joanna Tsiantas, Pat Hoeg, Patty Milon, Lisa Zaslow, Ellen Shapiro, Ricki Frankel, Henrietta Hung (Jen, that's more than "a bunch"—
that's "a lot"). No details on the movings and shakings of any of these ladies but there was a promise that a submission was coming to fill us in so stay tuned for our next column.
Mark and Kathleen Reilly Gross are living in Keene, New Hampshire. Mark was promoted last March to executive vice president of C&S Grocers of Brattleboro, Vermont, adding that to his existing title of chief financial officer and general counsel. Can you fit all of that on one side of a business card? Mark joined C&S in 1997 and is credited as being the prime architect of their recent acquisitions including the $300 million purchase of the Grand Union assets.
Ray Wagner is research director of information security strategies at Gartner, living in Nashville with his wife, Jennifer, and their two sons, Josh (7) and Thomas (4). Ray pursued a few start-up ventures along the road after receiving his masters at UVA in 1987 but also managed to find time to motorcycle cross country (and back again), get a Ph.D., live on a boat in the Chesapeake, live in Vermont writing software and dabble in a bit of teaching at both Vanderbilt and on the Hanover plain. Phew—it would appear as if we have caught up with Ray in one packed e-mail and, in his own words, "time flies."
Another doctorate among our ranks, Dru Van Hengel, resides with her husband and family in Santa Barbara, California. Dru took some time out of her academic career to go to China, where she was among a group of athletes representing Olympic women. You may recall that Dru was a member of the four-woman kayak team in the Atlanta Olympics. This news came my way courtesy of a fan of Dru's from the class of '38—keep us posted!
Did you ever think you would watch World Cup soccer at 3 a.m.? If classmate Jeff Slack has anything to do with it, he will have you watching soccer 24/7, if possible. Jeff joined FC Internazionale (better known to Italian soccer fans as "Inter"), the Milan-based soccer team that has been struggling since 1989. Jeff hopes to bring a combination of sports marketing and business savvy to turn things around. Buona fortuna, Jeff!
All the best to all of you.
