Once again I spent the first weekend of December at the Alumni Council meeting in Hanover. This year the vast majority of us ended up snowed in, as the East Coast was pounded by the biggest storm in many years. Dartmouth looked picture perfect, as you might imagine. Jeff Crowe and Gregg Dougherty are new members of the council. The three of us enjoyed a stimulating and informative weekend. Watch your e-mail or snail mail for a council update from me.
Hillary Smith Goodridge and her partner, julie, were lead plaintiffs in the gay marriage case decided by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Along with six other same-sex couples, they sued the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, challenging its policy denying marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The court ruled in their favor and gave the Massachusetts state legislature six months to rewrite the states marriage laws for the benefit of gay couples. Hillary and Julie have a daughter, Annie, who is 8 years old. They live in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Hillary is director of the Unitarian Universalist Funding Program.
Jim Friedlich is one of a group of investors in the parent company of The National Lampoon who are reviving the legendary comedy brand. The group just released a 25 th anniversary edition AnimalHouse DVD, which is selling briskly.AnimalHouse was co-authored by Chris Miller '63, who based the film on his experiences at Alpha Delta.
Sharon Lee Cowan has been named chief of communication and design for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, Italy. FAO is a specialized agency of the UN system, working on solutions to chronic hunger in poor countries. In the new position Sharon heads a team of writers and designers in producing public awareness advertising, exhibitions and printed materials. "This is enjoyable, creative work," says Sharon, "and at the same time we have a chance to make a positive impact. Most Americans are completely oblivious to the fact that almost i billion of their fellow human beings are going hungry." A Russian major at Dartmouth, Sharon finds only occasional use for Russian these days; but Italian, French and Spanish are basic to survival in Universe UN.
Finally, Clifford Flamm has been promoted from associate professor to professor at Herkimer County Community College. After graduating from Dartmouth he received his masters and Ph.D. from Cornell University. He teaches English as a second language.
