Greetings! I hope the summer has been good to you and your families. For a change, I have more than enough news to pass along from a variety of sources. Ken Cohen reported that he celebrated his 50th birthday (possibly the youngest class member to reach the milestone) with a 100-mile bike ride from La Jolla, California, to San Clemente. He sent along a picture of his completion of the trip, which also showed his wife and his Dartmouth cycling shirt.
We had a submission from a member of the class of '92 that John McPhaul has received the Environmental Quality Award from the EPA in recognition of his reporting. Congratulations, John.
Kip Hall wrote that, in addition to heading up the financial institutions and securities litigation practice team at Morgan Lewis in New York, he manages to still stay involved with family, career, ski racing and boat racing. He and his wife celebrated their 26th anniversary in June. His son graduated from Holderness this year and heads off to Trinity, while his daughter will be a senior at Darien HS. Just after he sent his news, he was heading from Atlanta back to New York, then on to Tuckerman's for the final spring skiing of the year.
No shortage of awards for members of the class. On June 12 Jim Beattie was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame. Congrats, Zelmo. Jim was honored for his accomplishments at South Portland High, Dartmouth and with the Yankees and Mariners on the field and in administrative positions with the Mariners, Expos and in his current position as GM of the Orioles. Jim and Martha Johnson Beattie will have two children at Dartmouth next year. We (Red Sox fans) are hoping his Orioles do well, but not too well this year. Keep up the good work, Jim.
Gary Love was presented with the Alumni Award on May 20 of this year. He is one of only two graduates to have received both the Alumni Award as well as the Young Alumni Distinguished Service Award. Gary's guests at the presentation at the Alumni Council dinner were William Rice and Craig Triplett as well as Reginald Thomas '75 and Vernon Baker '75. Also in attendance were Martha Beattie and Jennifer Kemeny. President Wrights remarks cited Gary's implementation of a program initially called Gary's Kids, which brought college-bound seniors from his Chicago high school for a Dartmouth visit. This program has evolved into Dartmouth Bound, which involves bringing 35 college-bound seniors in 10 major cities to Dartmouth. Gary also has been instrumental in a program called Mentors, Movers and Shakers, which supports Tucker Foundation speakers on campus. President Wright also cited Gary's establishment of a chair in biology named after Ernest Everett Just, class of 1907, one of the College's first distinguished black alumni, and Gary's establishment of the Gary L. Love '76 prize, which is presented each year to a senior for outstanding achievement in African and Afro-American studies. Along the way Gary' has formed close friendships with Presidents McLaughlin, Freedman and Wright and received numerous awards from the College that space limits from the Alumni Mag preclude me from listing. Congratulations to Gary for all his efforts and generosity.
That's it for now. Pull for our new Coach Teevens and look for his efforts to bear fruit in the fall. Best wishes to you and your families.
