Catherine and Todd Young welcomed their first child, Samuel Rohde, on July 10. Attendees at Samuel's bris a few weeks later included Sam Kingsland, Vic Parker, Whitney Gates Weisel, Karen White and Dennyjenkins '93. The Youngs make their home in San Mateo, California, and T.Y. is a senior scientist in Genentechs regulatory affairs department.
"Well, it took five years but I decided to leave Kansas," writes Mike Yu. "It wasn't the national exposure due to Fred Phelps and his gang of fanatics protesting at soldiers' funerals or the constant debate over evolution vs. intelligent design. I took a position with a group in Dayton, Ohio, and will be concentrating on minimally invasive and robotic urology as an assistant clinical professor of surgery. Other than that, we're still in the process of unpacking (and will probably be doing so for a long while yet—it took almost two tractor trailers to move all of our stuff). Anyone who's in the area should feel free to drop me a line at myu@woh.rr.com or give me a call." Mike and family are hoping to make it to reunion next year. He took his wife, Cynthia, to Hanover last fall for tier first exposure to autumn in all its glory in New England.
Pat Burtis sen: a newsy and entertaining update from London where he is investing in startups with an environmentally friendly bent on behalf of (Rock me) Amadeus Ventures. As of August Pat was subletting in Notting Hill, home to many an American expatyuppie, about which he notes, "To be honest, the Brits are much bigger yuppies than Americans. My theory is that those of us who grew up in the era of The Preppy Handbook are sufficiently abashed so as not to be quite so obnoxiously yuppie anymore. By contrast, I'm not sure The Preppy Handbook is viewed as altogether a bad thing here." Pat is coming to terms with the staggering cost of living and the joys of commuting on the hellaciously hot Tube coupled with the regional variances in frequency of showering. He has also determined where one can find the best selection of pestles in all of London. Look him up if you're passing through town.
In addition to being our reunion co-chair, Zia Daniell Wigder is a vice president and research director at Jupiterßesearch, where she oversees the media and advertising practice. Zia and her husband have two kids ages 5 and 3 and make their home in Riverdale, New York. Stay tuned for updates on reunion as we march toward June 15, 2007.
This just in: We are no longer young alumni. For those who haven't noticed, 15 years have passed since we collectively gave up our HBs, dedining balances, pong prowess and ERAs deliveries in exchange for diplomas. We are now grouped by the College amongst the geezer classes (or at least it feels that way) and as such are invited, along with the 14 classes that preceded us, to participate in the Dartmouth Family Party at the Top of the Hop on the Saturday of homecoming weekend. The most sobering part is that it takes place from 2 to 4:30 p.m. It is now patently obvious to all that we cannot make any legitimate claims regarding late night stamina and even hopes of staying up for Monday Night Football are. fading fast. Ugh.
