Thanks to Steve, Mary Conway and Dave Plekenpol I have some class news to share with you. Steve sent word of Erik Hammerschlag, who lives in Richmond, California, and works for a company that designs mountaineering and backpacking equipment. Phoebe Chandler wrote in to report that she married Tad Turner on November 26. Their families have been friends for several generations so she has known him for most of her life. Tads grown sons will join Phoebe's two daughters Adele and Charlotte, 13 and 9, in their new familial venture. The newlyweds will be moving out of the Chicago area to Lake Bluff on the North Shore at the end of the school year. Phoebe has been keeping busy painting and is now transitioning into woodworking and furniture-making. Her newest project will now be the new house they are soon moving into which, according to her, needs some work.
I also heard, thanks to Mary, from Gina Blus. Two years ago she left Sun Microsystems, one of the Silicon Valley companies that flew the highest—and fell the hardest—during and after the dot.com boom. After decompressing for a while she immersed herself in environmental and sustainability issues and became an LEED-accredited professional (a.k.a. a greenbuilding geek). Gina and her husband then moved to Berkeley, where she started a small consulting practice where she works with a mix of clients (a government agency, a few nonprofits and both large and small businesses) to help them with strategic planning, goals, metrics and operational issues. Her latest project merges both old and new interests. Gina is helping a software company, Autodesk, create a Web site that demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and showcases the work of visionary designers. Long-term she hopes to help companies redesign their products to use fewer, healthier resources and tread more lightly on the planet.
Closer to home I caught up with Robin Riley Ahrens. Her mother and sister now live in Hanover so her four children are growing up as big Dartmouth fans. For years, she tells me, the best part of their summers has been Bob Gaudet's hockey camp. Just like their mom, she writes, they spend lots of time in Thompson Arena. When not in Hanover, her kids all skate at a local winter club close to her home here on Long Island. Robin has been taking some time off from her writing. Too much driving and coaching on the schedule, not to mention the laundry! Robin worked in the auction field for many years doing PR for Sotheby's and Christies and started writing children's books when she moved back from Japan and did the kid thing. Her specialty is picture books in verse that she has enjoyed reading in schools and at libraries. She also teaches writing to kids.
And this last is from Dave Plekenpol, who heard from John Donohoe that after 23 years at Bain he joined eßay last spring as president of the core business. According to John, "eBay is a wonderfully mission-driven organization and I am enjoying the 'repotting' immensely." On the family front, Johns oldest son (21) is currently spending a term in Paris, his second son is a freshman at Dartmouth and his 12-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son are still at home. John's wife, Eileen "Muffin," just finished her Ph.D. at UC Berkeley with a focus on social ethics and foreign policy. And last but not least, John continues to enjoy serving as a Dartmouth trustee. He looks forward to seeing you all at the 25th reunion, which I will remind you all again is June 14-17,2007.
