Earthwatch Institute has named Whit Johnson as chairman of the board. In announcing the appointment Ed Wilson, president and CEO of Earthwatch, stated: "Whit's own international experience makes him the ideal ambassador for the important role that Earth-watch plays, not just in terms of helping to understand the global environmental issues of the next decade, but in promoting the idea that individuals from all walks of life can make a difference, both around the world and in communities back home." Whit is a principal with PlumRiver LLC, a provider of business-to-business and sales automation software. Prior to co-founding Plum-River he was founder and CEO of Lion Rock International, an apparel manufacturer with offices in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Boston as well as manufacturing plants in Costa Rica. Customers included J. Crew, Timberland North Face and LL Bean. One of Lion Rocks divisions focused on producing and marketing apparel made from 100 percent organic cotton, an environmentally beneficial segment of the textile market. Whit also served on the board of directors for a natural dye manufacturer, Allegro Inc., a leader in producing textile dyes without the harsh chemicals and heavy metals normally associated with this industry.

Mark Lena sent news: "I am living in Orono, Maine, practicing gastroenterology in Bangor. All three kids are out of the house—at least for now—Ryan is a freshman at Tufts, Meghan a junior at Skidmore and Sean just graduated from Middlebury. I have been a Scoutmaster for our local Boy Scout Troop for five years and am in charge of the Council Eagle review board. For fun I coach the high school cross country ski team and have been competing in ski marathons when the snow conditions permit! Most anticipated is my upcoming sabbatical to hike the Appalachian Trail with my son Sean. We plan to start in Georgia on April 9 and hike our way home to Maine by September.
