We were sad to note the passing of William D. Hutchinson on January 27. We were reminded of a note sent by Tom Braden to The Drum last fall. We reprint some of it here for the larger Dartmouth family of the Alumni Magazine:

"I note that Bill Hutchinson is the oldest living member of our class. That is a distinction I suppose, but it is one that would not do justice to the college career of William D. Hutchinson.

"I can think of at least three more impor- tant distinctions that make Bill Hutchinson a living memory to all of us. Dartmouth's freshman football team opened the season against some forgotten prep school. Bill received a punt early in the contest. He ran it back for a touchdown.

"Distinction No. 2 came in our sophomore year as Dartmouth played Harvard. That was the year "Bomb Shell" Bill Hutchinson, as a Boston paper headlined it, ran wild. I have forgotten the final score but none of us who went down to Cambridge to watch the game can forget Bill sidestepping the Harrard end, who fell flat on his face as Bill went around him and through a broken field for the first Dartmouth touchdown. There were more to come.

"There was the Yale game in which Bill dodged and sidestepped the whole Yale team as he ran down the sidelines.

"Those were exciting times Bill gave to all of us, far more worthy of distinction than the fact that he is now the oldest of us all."
