After our infamous ice storm with thousands left without power for more than a week, we had hoped for a lengthy reprieve, but no such luck. After all, we do live in New Hampshire, where winter happens every year. As I am writing it is snowing hard—the teeny flakes that seemingly go on forever and accumulate amazingly fast. We are snug and cozy inside looking out at a beautiful winter wonderland, calling to mind "The Wintersong": "For the wolf wind is wailing at the doorways, And the snowdrifts deep along the road, And the ice gnomes are marching from their Norways, And the great white cold walks abroad." My late father-in-law Dr. William Lougee, class of 1888, and Richard Hovey, class of 1885, were great friends of Dartmouth those many years ago.

We are sad to report the death of Rips only classmate, the class baby. Arthur Nighswander died at Kendal in Hanover December 5. Though he was dependent on oxygen, he kept busy and was still involved with several legal matters. During the years he had served the class as newsletter editor and president. A memorial service was held at Kendal early in January.

This year, true to the tradition, the Dartmouth Club of the Upper Valley held its Christmas party in mid-December. Thayer Hall looked festive decked out in all the seasons finely, and it is always a wonderful way for friends to enjoy each other in a holiday mood.

Rip adds: Life comes upon us stage by stage Id name them if I could Youth comes along, then middle age Then "Gee, you're looking good."
