Nancy and I are enjoying the hospitality of Linda and Steve Waterhouse for the Carni-Vail gathering. Joining us here are Dianne and Tom Campbell, who are celebrating their ninth anniversary. Tom has joined the ranks of Dartmouth authors with the release of his book, Fighting Slavery in Chicago, in January. It’s a very interesting read.

Sadly we have lost three classmates this past year. As previously reported, Ed Holmes died last summer. Steve Waterhouse was able to attend the memorial service in November at Dartmouth House in England. Thomas Jackson Barnett III died on November 9, 2008, in Portland, Oregon, where he practiced law. James Roger Hartmann passed away on November 20, 2008, in Kerrville, Texas. Graveside services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors offered by the U.S. Air Force on April 6. Obituaries for Tom and Jim will appear in the Alumni Magazine. Our sympathies go out to their families.

Matt Morrison wrote in a recent e-mail from Australia: “Just before I came to Oz in early August last year I sold our old family house in Boulder for a lock-and-leave condo in Lafayette, Colorado. Susan, my wife, teaches speech-pathology here at James Cook University and I retired from teaching after 31 years. I have no regrets and have come along as her house-husband, social director, beachcomber. Meanwhile our two somewhat grown children (23 and 18) are living in the condo. Life is good. The bush fires have been a devastating episode for everyone concerned. I spent 23 years as a volunteer firefighter living in the Colorado mountains and I know firsthand what those folks are dealing with. While they’ve been fighting bushfires, we in the northern tropics have been inundated with floods. In the meantime the outpouring of popular support has been mind-blowing. The Aussies really know how to pitch in when one (or many) of them is down. Our local Rotary Club sent a check for $5,000 as well as another thousand we raised at a sausage sizzle/book sale this weekend. People here are living embodiments of walking their talk.”

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, July 14, at Old Saybrook, Connecticut. The class of 1965 executive committee will hold its annual meeting at the Bill Webster’s completely rebuilt home in Old Saybrook.

Terry and Ed Keible are taking the planning lead for the West Coast mini-reunion, September 11 to 13. They would welcome your input. Contact them with ideas, indications of interest, and especially offers to help put it all together! E-mail Terry and Ed at tkeible@yahoo.com or ed.keible@endwave.com or phone them at (650) 326-0393.

Planning for our 45th reunion on June 14-17, 2010, is under way. If you have interest in helping organize one of the great college weekends let Ted Atkinson or Bruce Wagner know with an e-mail: Ted is tacons@aol.com; Bruce is bruce.wagner@alum.dartmouth.org.

The Hanover mini-reunion will be October 23 to 25. We will once again gather at Pierce’s Inn.
