Well they say no news is good news. You all must be having too much fun to stop and write in about it yet. But that gives me hope that I’ll be hearing lots of exciting stuff soon. Hint, hint. Otherwise, I will be forced to troll Facebook pages for updates!

I did have the opportunity recently to read a fascinating and beautiful debut poetry collection from our very own Nomi Stone. Stranger’s Notebook: Poems is thoughtful reflection on the time Nomi spent in Djerba, Tunisia, shortly after graduation in 2003. Djerba is home to an ancient community of about 1,000 Kohanic Jews, whose peaceful coexistence with their Muslim Tunisian neighbors has only been recently strained. The underlying story of this place and these people is fascinating and the antidotes conveyed are both touching and thought provoking. Nomi has kept quite busy since Dartmouth. She was a Fulbright Scholar, received a master’s degree in Middle Eastern studies from Oxford University and now serves as an assistant editor for The Middle East Journal. Congratulations on all your successes, Nomi!

Director, producer, overall super-cool person and class treasurer Jethro Rothe-Kushel played a key role in kicking off the 81st Annual Academy Awards. He supervised the production of the “Top of the Broadcast,” a two-plus-minute introduction featuring Hollywood legends, current nominees and fans all commenting on entertainment. Jethro is also serving as president of Dartmouth Alumni in Entertainment and Media Association (DAEMA), an official alumni shared interest group that also claims Chris Meledandri ’81, executive producer of the movie Dr. Suess’s Horton Hears a Who, and Shonda Rhimes ’91, creator and executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy, as members. When you win your first Oscar, please give a shout out to Dartmouth, Jethro!
