Hats off to the first '20 son in the service. Porte Durkee writes that his boy Bill, Dartmouth '40, is in the British Army. Major Jack Mayer tells us that he is temporarily stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, at the Command and General Staff School. Jack's only complaint is that he missed all this fall's football games. He reports seeing Charlie Sargent at Fort Monroe, Va. This is true as the same was reported by Charlie's wife. She said that from September through November Major Sargent was in Camden, S. C., taking part in the First Army manoeuvers. He is second in command in the Public Relations division and his forte seems to be entertaining the various visiting dignitaries, both military and civilian. However, his greatest delight is that he is stationed at a hotel and for the first time in 13 months has an honest-togoodness bedroom.
THE NAVAL DEPARTMENT-An advertising trade journal shows a great picture of Jake Gorton shaking hands with his former boss, Arthur Kudner. Jake was an executive at Kudner's Inc. before he left to join the Naval Aviation forces as a Lieutenant Commander.
Bob Van Iderstine is now relaxing after a successful but strenuous campaign for the mayorship of Tenafly, N. J. Being the only candidate for the office, he found himself his own worst enemy. He figures the job will be softer than his previous one or ones, e.g., Police Commissioner, head of local defense unit, etc., etc.
There may be one avenue through which we can get a little copper to fix that broken pipe down cellar—Carl Lenz is now a V. P. of the Kennecott Copper Cos., located in New York.
Sixteen of the brothers turned out for the annual pre-Harvard gathering in Boston, namely, Macomber, Thompson, McGoughran, Merritt, Roland, Bruce, Whitaker, Dorney, Harvey, Paul Richter, Tillson, Pope, Ken Spalding and son (Dart '44) and Roc Elliott. By the way, Roc's the guy who likes to receive checks which pay for our subscription to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. His mailing address is listed at the head of these notes.
Clyde Bidwell was married on September 26 to Dagma Lundquist of Hartford, Conn. Congratulations are hereby extended.
As usual, Ben Ayres saw most of the football games this fall concentrating on those in Hanover. This, in spite of the fact that his daughter Lois is now in her second year in Wellesley and son, Don, a sophomore at Worcester Academy. Speaking of sons, Wade Smith's is a candidate for the Big Green's tennis and skiing teams. Vin Breglio has a son at Massachusetts State College. Breg finds time to work in considerable orchestra leading in addition to his regular job on a Springfield (Mass.) newspaper.
Neighbor Joe Lindsey recently started his 19th year of teaching French, German and Latin at the Albany Boys Academy. He professes to be quite a gardener but I'll match my vegetables with anyone in the Class with the possible exception of the pro, Bung Roland.
Hib Richter recently completed a $05 day marathon session as a representative in The Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Just as he was catching up on his sleep and getting back into his law practice he was called to Washington where he will be stationed in the Judge Advocate General's office in the Munitions Building, War Department. If Sal Andretta or Charles Goodnow will give him a buzz on any Tuesday he will meet them at the Annapolis Hotel for the Dartmouth luncheon.
