LOG OF NINETY-FIVE
It interests at least one member of our class (me) to peruse the recorded doings of '95 men a half century, and more, ago. Perhaps it will stir memories in surviving '95ers. So here's a sort of Log of Ninety-five as taken from the records of 1893 in our Aegis, of which Bob Campbell was editor-in-chief and Bob Thornburgh business manager.
The Board were:—Harry Clinton Morrison, Arthur Forward Campbell, Burton True Scales, Carroll Arthur Davis, Arthur Dudley West, George Willis Day and Arthur James Dresser.
The frontispiece is a portrait of Ex-Senator Patterson, to whose memory the Aegis was dedicated in the following words:
"To the memory of James Willis Patterson who, taken from us at the very beginning of his professorship, has left us an ideal of true nobility."
I remember him well. His commanding figure and presence was a great contrast to the senatorial and professorial presence of United States senators and college professors of the present day. Take a look at his picture, you who have an Aegis. Observe the neatness of his black coat and bow tie, the up-standing wide open white collar, the large head, adorned with flowing white hair, the strong, intelligent, cultured face flanked with distinguishing burnside whiskers.
As I look at it I find myself devoutly wishing that the Senate of the United States, in the present confused state of world affairs, included on its roster at least fifty statesmen of his dignity and ability.
Another notable picture in the '95 Aegis is that of William Jewett Tucker. He had just assumed the office of President of Dartmouth College. At our Commencement X had the honor of delivering the address to the President and I have always cherished that honor. Chapel attendance under Dr. Tucker's leadership ceased to be a half-hearted affair. The old Dartmouth receded and the New Dartmouth began to emerge immediately under the spell of his lovable personality.
What comment does this arouse in you survivors of my honorable class? Let me have your comments, please, for publication in this column.
