Like it way. Trumpeters opened the 161 st Dartmouth College Commencement. AI Marsters was senior class marshall, John D. Rockefeller Jr. was spokesman for the parents, and the Reverend Benjamin M. Washburn '07 exhorted us to become "Prophets Not Without Honor." The Dartmouth invited us to "Stop at Jeff Tesreau's Service Station and Fill Up" and to enjoy third-cabin transportation to Europe for $95.
And who better to tell it like it is than reunion chair Dick Bowlen, who has contributed the following about our Glorious Golden Gathering:
"This is a grand opportunity to bring you up- to-date on a few of the more than 300 people now planning to come back next month. First, additions to the list you received in March: Natalie (John) Whipple, Frank Kinderman, Jesse Lichter's three daughters, Art and Sylvia Behal, Ed and Liz Butterworth, Dick and Grace Squire, Shirley (Agnew) Talcott, Hank and Linda Kohn and two children, John and Elizabeth Sanders, Stan Osgood, Dave and Ruth McCord, George Tunnicliff, Jack and Mary Wooster, Frances (How land) Ziegler, and Ed Conklin and guest.
"And a fleeting glimpse of many others: Ed Conklin hoping to room again in 44 Middle Mass, where he started out 54 years ago; the Pratts, facing the ordeal of running our cocktail parties, spending some time in Costa Rica; the Fred Tangemans coming from San Diego to Baltimore to pick up their daughter and her husband and two children, then, to make it a fun experience, taking Amtrak to White River Junction.
"Also, Dundine Burns, the widow coming the greatest distance, from Denver; Burt and Ruth Crandell returning from their place at Eleuthera to run our tent; Fred and Priscilla Bowes running their own attendance drive for the GGG; and Ave Raube caught up in the matter of state taxes, serving charges, guarantees, gratuities, menu, and the weather for our Sunday noon farewell lunch. A widow who cannot return wrote, 'I love Dartmouth and the spirit of the class of '30'; another, who is coming, said, 'I am looking forward to being a part of the 50th reunion.' The ladies com- mittee has done a superb job in building warm relations with the more than 25 widows who are coming back.
"The Sheraton Country Inn will shelter Bowes, Chandler, Conklin, Fawcett, Celie French, Ackley, Schneebeli, Seldon, Tiedtke and Page. Frank Kinderman wrote that he is coming from the coast because of a phone call from his old roommate, Bill Doran. Bill Doran himself is bringing a family group of at least six. Six also for Joe Hancort, including an eight-year-old grandson now playing Mozart (blood will tell). Ted Saunders will come with four grown children. Harry and Rosemary Casler will fly in on Aer Lingus.
"Unfortunately there are some who will not be able to come for reasons of personal or family health. We do not know all of these, but we may not see Mai Gallagher, Jack Deveau, Chuck Fay, Oscar Sandberg, John Cheney, or Joe Neale. Why not sit down right now and drop one or two of them a line? Also, the Alex McFarlands send warm regards and best wishes.
"When you meet him with the usual smile on his face, don't forget to thank Charlie Widmayer for the great job he did this spring in getting out the new directory, which has made it so easy for us to get back together again.
"Calls came from Hank Kohn saying, 'This is a classmate coming out of the woodwork,' and from Walt Dresser, 'the oldest man in Calais, Maine.' Thanks are due to Eric Birmingham and 'Brownie' Brown for helping Burt Sherwood round up the gang in that area of the country.
"And now for those of you who now wish you had planned to get to the GGG, let me tell you, you still can! Give me a ring at 603/756-3904, and we can get you a dormitory room till May 23. This is a case where the whole is larger than the sum of its parts and you are one of the parts we are missing."
Special note before closing: Please disregard that portion of the card you received from the Hopkins Center about the play A Good Evening Beyond the Fringe. This is not scheduled for our weekend. Just complete the top portion to indicate which night you want Glee Club tickets, and return it to Hanover.
