Hanover, February, 1951, is not too dissimilar to the one we knew nine years ago. Only the cloud of national uncertainty replaces the certainty of 1942. Once again, enlistment officers vie for space in administration row, students queue up outside the dean's office seeking counsel on casting the die vs. sweating it out, and the College gears for civilian acceleration and its role as a military training center. President Dickey estimates that Dartmouth will have 25-50% fewer civilian students next year. Pretty soon, we are going to look on this kind of thing as a "return to normalcy."
Ran into West Shell recently .... there's a boy leading Teddy Roosevelt's "full life." Father of two, Sally, three and a half, and Bonny, five months, West schedules the rest of his time between his work with the Myers Cooper real estate and construction company, serving on the board of governors of the local Exchange Club, as Director of the Gyro Club, Beta Chief for District 14, and.... (small print) the Marine Corps Reserve. Jim Briggs, Secretary for the Cincinnati "D" Club, is in the heating and air conditioning business, Peck, Hanniford and Briggs. Dr. Bud Coith is in town practicing at the General Hospital.
Received a note the other day from wandering Fritz and Joanie Hier .... it was dropped in the Cutler aboard a USA-bound liner. They must have heard Hoover's speech .... or else the Naval Air Corps is getting a little testy with its reservists.
And speaking internationally, Clint Gardner, former editor of the Military Government's daily newspaper in Berlin, has joined Freedom and Union magazine as advertising manager. This publication is the official organ of Clarence Streit's world government movement.
Had a nice letter from Hap Bush .... announcing brand new Harry Charles Jr. Hap is with the Connecticut General Life Insurance Cos. in Hartford .... speaks with pride of the local "D" Club, and the fine manner in which Bill Carey holds the walls up. The club's welcome mat is always out for any of you fellows travelling through the capital city. The Bushes plan to be in attendance at the '51 Carnival.
Do you recall freshman days when we treated returning members of the class of '34 with the tolerant respect due katabolic victims of another era? Not too comforting to think that the campus is now speckled with 1954 numeral sweaters. Hadacol please! Colonel Bruce Thompson is still travelling the southern circuit for Coca Cola .... a bon vivant rebel Jim Farley. He must move too fast, for none of those southern gals have got him to the finish line yet. Helene and RickLewis have decked the halls with boughs of blue, for a new little son! I just heard that Chucker and Dottie Glines have a baby daughter Nancy.
Few odd notes and things: Frank Ames has been named Sales Manager of the Dwight Bros. Paper Company in Chicago. Bob Tompa is making his home at the Dartmouth Club in N. Y. C.... up in Hanover, Jim Browning is keeping close to the ski trails, accepted a position as instructor in Mechanical Engineering at Thayer School. Art Howland and Art Kiendl are holding down the administrative end.
Architect Penn Frost is with the J. F. Lawson Company in N. Y. C., commutes from his home in Hohokus, N. J Brad Grinnell selling textiles for the J. P. Stevens Co. in Dallas, Tex Bill Turpin is in Biedendorf, Germany with the U.S. State Dep't
several more of our doctors have returned to service: Lt. Harry Morse is at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md....
and Lt. Bob Wiley is attached to the 118 Medical Battalion, 43rd Division in Camp Pickett, Va.
I'd like to pad in another 300 words or so, but none of you fellows got engaged, married or participated in any similar activities since the last writing.
I realize that you're all asked to do a lot of things these days.... pay taxes, prevent fires, join the army, increase your sales, join the Navy, be kind to animals, buy antihistamine drugs, etc and while I don't like to add fuel to the fire, I do wish you would take time out to drop me a card, so I won't get caught short for 300 words again.
The following got back to Hanover recently: Charlie Clucas, Art Saul, the DaveNutts and the Bill Stahls.
