Well, our Fund drive is off to a flying start! .... and we want to thank you fellows for your immediate and generous response. There is no doubt that this will be our big year! Let's all give Don our fullest support. I won't take space trying to convince those of you who have not yet mailed in your contribution of the importance of joining the rest of the troops in making 1944 one of Dartmouth's most substantial supporters. You yourself know how much Dartmouth has meant to you, and are as aware as I that it was the generous gifts of our predecessors who made much of what we enjoyed possible. Now it is our turn.

The job of secretary can be very pleasant. It makes you feel good to pass along the happy news when you birds become engaged, when you get married, then when you pass out the Coronas, and when you get that promotion. But it is difficult to report the unhappy and sorrowful. I know you will be as shocked as I to learn of the untimely passings of SteveLewis and Houghton Letts. Steve, whom you all remember as our crackerjack Editor-inChief of the Jacko, was studying for his doctorate after taking a masters in journalism at Harvard when he was stricken with a serious abdominal malignancy. Steve died December 17 at the U. S. Marine Hospital in Baltimore. Houghton was with us only during our freshman year, during which time he participated in cross country. We only learned recently from his mother that Houghton died in action April 1944. No further information is available. I know you will join me in expressing our heartfelt condolences to the Lewises and the Lettses. We have lost two exceptionally fine men.

I'm afraid this will be a rather brief column unless I can think of a quick shaggy dog story .... after I cleared the decks this evening I peeked into my news folder and felt like Mater Hubbard. This is a promise: I'll join the pyramid clubs of the first ten news-senders-inners. Anyway ....

International Cable dated February 25 brings forth good news from Berlin, Germany where young John Reed Gardner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clint G., greeted the world. "Hose"Craig cruised into New York from Dayton to stand up for "Tank" Bruce, who is now safely married and going to give us a squad of little tanklets. Tanks very much. If Wiley Hitchcock could write as well as he plays the 88 I could elaborate more fully on his success

round aboutly I understand that since picking up a master's in music at Michigan the "Wile has been making quite a name for himself. Those of you who attended Tuck will be delighted to learn that "Sperk" Welch, one of National Cash Register's more fair haired salesmen, is operating out of the Accounting Division Sales Department. And they said Horatio Alger was dead! Sperk should contact DaveMacGregor who is a cost accountant with the Verney Corporation in Brunswick, Me. HaidenRitchie, the clever Jacko artist and cartoonist, is with the advertising firm of Martin & Tuttle in Seattle, Wash I wish he would send us some of his work to liven up this column. Ran into Stan Zarod at Hanover over Winter Carnival. Stan, a $30,000 a year broker by his own admission, is contemplating going into the teaching and coaching profession. The ticker tape gives him eye strain. Stan tells of BobCallan having the opportunity to try out for Newark this year. And speaking about teaching, I understand that Pete Weston is delivering some well turned lectures down at Norfolk Academy. I hear that Merrill Summers is doing something clever over the airwaves for station WGHF in New York.

John "Down to the Sea in Ships" Eaton has taken up Frostbite winter sailboat racing over at the Larchmont Yacht Club. He started the season like Crosby's horses, but recently has amazed club members, himself, and the sports page typesetter, by jumping from his reserved cellar spot to well up among the leaders. I hear that Dave MacGuire has become assistant manager of the J. Rossie Velvet Company in Mystic, Conn. Nikitas Manitsas is over in the ETO with the Army Engineers. Ralph Oberlin Jr. has garnered the post of Secretary in the Igelstroem-Oberlin Cos., Inc. in Massilon, Ohio.

I was sorry to have missed Art Kiendl when I was in Hanover, but did hear that he is getting along very well. As you perhaps know, Art, our only representative in the Ad building, is assistant to the Dean .... and a good man for your kids to get to know. Al Howland, business manager of the Mary Hitchcock Hospital, still lets himself get embroiled in many and varied college and fraternity activities. There isn't too much news about our doctor friends, but rumor has it that one, Bob Remmer, has been spotted operating in and about the Syracuse area.

We are working on a five year survey questionnaire which will be mailed to you shortlyWhen the results are tabulated you will be able to grade yourself financially, scholastically, maritally, etceterally.

I certainly do wish that you gentlemen would supply with a quick social note as to your activities.
