One hundred and sixty-five alumni and guests attended the annual spring dinner meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Washington, D. C., March 5 at the National Press Club, making it one of the biggest and best events in recent years.
President Dickey's remarks regarding the problems facing America today and the responsibilities of institutions of higher learning in meeting these problems, particularly subversion or communism, were most timely.
Retiring President F. Lowell Haas '35 presided. Karl M. Dollak '35 was named president. Attendance awards went to the Class of 1929 for having 12, the greatest number, present; and to the Class of 1899, with 100% pres: ent; Warren Kendall, who came from Florida for the meeting. Two other classes registered 100% but their representatives, Everett M.Stevens '01 and Bill Wood '06, most graciously stepped aside in favor of Mr. Kendall, who was also the oldest graduate present.
The Barbershop Quartet of F. Stirling Wilson '16 gave several selections throughout the evening. Former Secretary Barry Sullivan '36 read the humorous and clever annual report of the Club by "Z. Mink Brook," authored by Stirling Wilson.
U.S. Senator Charles W. Tobey (R N. H.) '29h recessed his New York waterfront ciime committee hearing in time to attend the dinner and speak briefly. Craig Sheaffer '20, new Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Domestic Affairs, and U.S. Representative Merrow of New Hampshire were also honor guests. Sherm Adams '20, Assistant to the President, was unable to attend.
Harold H. Leich '29, former president, was dinner chairman. Other officers elected were: Dr. Russel S. Page Jr. '36, first vice president; Willis S. Fitch '17, second vice president; Donald P. (King) Cole '19, secretary (reelected); Richard A. Whiting '44, treasurer. The executive committee consists of the Club officers, alumni councillor, and Dickson R. Loos '46, F. Lowell Haas, Matthew G. Jones '23, Edward Mecutchen '31, Barry Sullivan and John J. English '40. The nominating committee included Hal Fitz '23, chairman;. Larry Reeves '33 and Bob Ford '34.
Ed Hiestand '10, California's new G.O.P. Congressman, spoke briefly before the Club at a recent weekly luncheon. Ed Mecutchen favored us with a most interesting sound and color film of the National Advisory Council on Aeronautics, regarding jet planes breaking the sound barrier.
Reports from Hanover were given by Sid Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, at the March 17 luncheon, and by Bill McCarter '19, Director of Athletics, on March 24.
Hal Leich made the Washington (D. C.) Sunday Star Pictorial Magazine of February 22 in connection with a feature story on skiing in the mountains near Davis, W. Va. Hal is one of the prime movers in the Washington Ski Club.
The Washington Club has nominated PercyM. Russell '29, former president, for a second two-year term as Alumni Councillor, beginning July 1, 1953.
