I had planned to shroud the allotted space for this month's column with a heroic eulogy on Dartmouth's historic last second victory over Holy Cross. I have all the clippings and morgue on Leo McKenna to pad 1500 words.
But I procrastinated one day too long. My no-good radio just murmured the Army score. I should go on and point out what a crumb Earl Blaik is, how he should have maggots in his mess kit, that perhaps McCarthy was right, and in the next war why we ought to join the Navy, but with elections coming up we'll peruse class topics in deference to Dwight D., and hope Earl gets drafted (or investigated).
Cincinnati has historically had the toughest competitive beer market in the nation with its flock of local breweries fighting themselves and the big national outfits. To make it worse, Tommy "Old Reliable" Henrich, of Yankee fame, recently moved into town and introduced "Wunderbrau" with a gold plated advertising budget. You will be pleased to know that "Bavarians," a man's beer, retaliated handsomely by appointing Lou Schott to head up sales promotion and advertising, with excellent results.
Before departing the excitement of the Queen City, I might mention seeing WestShell and Jim Briggs at the Junior League fashion show, whistling and stomping and whooping it up like any red blooded "Old Howard" alumnus. Bud Coith's attractive wife, Nancy was a stellar attraction of the evening.
Per our Winchell-ish prediction last month, Volney Croswell and Anne Pearson were married in Alexandria, Va., on September 4. Volney is an art director with McGraw-Hill and Anne knocks out trick copy for J. Walter Thompson advertising. The Dick Pleasants sported a casual two weeks in Bermuda before returning to the serious side of marriage and determining who takes the garbage out in the morning.
And the bachelor ranks, like Cleveland hopes, keeps diminishing. The good counsellor, Carl Eldridge, and Margaret Marnell trod down the aisle of the Lady Chapel of St. Patrick's in New York City on August 21. The Eldridges, too, eased off for Bermuda... just about a week after the Pleasants.
Then out Pelham way, Harry Davis and Ann Herbert decided to buy a garbage disposal unit and get married. The wedding date hasn't been settled yet, will probably be based on manufacturers delivery.
Those of you who feel there is undue padding in this month's report, please note there have been no Marilyn-Joe jokes so far (while on the topic of garbage disposal matters).
Dr. Lamar Ager, a psychiatrist, has bolted down his couch at the Menninger Foundation, Topeka, Kansas, so the next time you're out that way and feel that your psyches need their valves reground, stop in. You can drop over to Overland Park and see Alex McPherson growing corn as high as an elephant's sty or down to Kansas City (Kansas) and have the youngsters tuned up by pediatrician FrankBehrle, or across the river to Kansas City, Mo. and hoist one with Dr. Sterling Suddarth.
I guess you've heard that Warren Sullivan is sales manager of John Wiley and Sons, publishers of school text books. Harold "Bushy"Salomanowitz is secretary of Superintendence Company, in New York City. I don't have any idea what Superintendence Company does but it must be substantial as "Bushy" is settled with the landed gentry of Scarsdale. ChuckRendigs, in town on Wall Street with Bache and Company, commutes for Greenwich. Clark MacGregor has moved again, now up in Wayzata, Minn., within handy booing distance of Joe McCarthy.
Just to give you an idea where a few of the chaps are. Bill Marinn is now settled in Los Angeles; Dr. Dick Silberstein is out on Staten Island; Warren Mills is down in Austin, Texas; Jim Tillison in Beaumont, Texas; Tom Kunau lawyering in Reno; Vern Geun in Berkeley, Calif. Dr. Ed Mortimer in Cleveland; Ted Brush out in Beaverron, Oregon; Boh Blair in Hudson, Ohio; lack Snohble in Carbondale, Colo.; Dave Little in Sheraton, Wyoming; Bill Saunders in Weston, Mass : Dr.John Tope in Oak Park, Ill.; Ed Eubanks in Webster Groves, Mo.; Dr. Bill Mussey in Urbana, Ill.; and Walt Olin in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a few roads away from Max Edwards in Hobbs.
Last month Art Said, Al Whitlock and A. S. MacDowell got back to Hanover.
