The deadline for the '52 Drive is ... June 30! If you haven't already contributed .. . please make a point of doing it tonite!
It is important... and one of the better, more satisfying investments you'll make this year.
On last report from Don (May 1) we were showing slight gains in participation and volume .. . and by Green Derby standards we ranked 4th out of 9 classes ('38-'46).
No cause for complacency on this early position, however. .. that's only 26% of our objective ... the fight is yet to be fought. Many of the "old guard" are in already .. . and some of the more generous contributors like Jack Haffenreffer have come in twice. Remember the words of the immortal J. P. Jones.
The detail was kinda jazzed up in the issue before last, when the names of our Assistant Class Agents were omitted from the agenda. They are: Kirk Bassett, Wally Benjamin, Billgenoist, Phil H. Brown, John Callow, BobQolwell, Mac Corner, Al Faber, Max Edwards, gill Bale, Dave Judson, Howie Pennington,George Pert, Bob Riggs, Steve Rothermel, ArtSaul, Bill Saunders, Marty Shea, Norm Simpson and Bill White.
"Boog" McLoud has displayed a fearlesssense of loyalty by organizing a '44 dinner atthe Dartmouth Club for May 21. After ourlast get-together at the Park Avenue Junto in1949, the management decided that the intemperate conduct of the '44s warranted the life-long banishment of any collective group ofthree or more of them. The reprieve is a happy one and a tribute to the Boog's sales-manship.
Speaking about McLoud, the manager ofthe Multi-Flex Division of U.S. Rubber wasout to see us today ... and remarked what awonderful job the Boog was doing in the promotion end of the business and how well hismonthly house organ Just Between US hasbeen received by the field representatives.
Then up Westchester way, Bob Colwell, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Westchester, called a meeting April 29 Bob reports that there are about 30 '44s in thecounty. Among other things Bob writes that"George Cusack is now General Manager of'Liquid Carbonic de Mexico'. His address isPrado Norts 645, Lomas de Chalpultepec,Mexico, D.F. His mother and father just returned from a four-month visit with Georgeand inform me that his little girl, BarbaraCornelai, is now 9 months old. They say thatGeorge is very happy in Mexico and has nointention of returning to Westchester in thenear future. Chalpultepec is a suburb of Mexico City and George has a nice house there, with three servants that Mrs. Cusack Sr.would have liked to have brought back toPelham.
"Bill Ard is doing O.K. as shown by theenclosed clipping from New Rochelle's dailynewspaper. (Article is entitled 'Ard AuthorsBest Seller'). Bill lives in a new apartment development here.
"James Finn is now in the area ... in Scarsdale. So is Warren Kimball who just movedback to White Plains. He has two children andis doing a lot of decorating in his new home."Dave MacGregor is now located in Green-wich, Conn.... having moved south fromManchester, N. H.- He is now in the EmpireState office of the Verney Corporation, producers of rayons. I put him in fine shape withhis landlord one week after he moved byknocking off a garage door as I left for home(Honest, Judge, I was cold sober)."
Had a startling note from Bill Reinman the other day claiming a record ... and enclosed was a clipping from the Youngstown Vindicator which read as follows: "Twin girls, probably the heaviest twins ever born in the Youngstown District, are doing nicely in the North Side Hospital today. The proud parents are Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Reinman of 32 W. Florida Ave. (Ed. note: recently changed to 731 Linwood). The twin girls, born Monday, weighed a total of 16 pounds. Leslie Jeanne, born at 1:25 AM weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz., and Lynne Alison, born at 1:31 AM weighed 7 lbs. 15 oz. The weight of the Identical twins was cited by the attending physician as very unusual. The average weight for twins is about 4 lbs., and an 8 lb. baby alone is a heavy child, he said."
Don't worry, Bill, that's a record. Officially. Congratulations.
But how about this! On March 24 the MacCorners came through with twin boys... John Bartlett and Jim Montgomery! Ours is, to be sure one of the more outstanding classes to ever pass through the hills! Jack and Jim are identical twins, too ... and raise Mac's Dartmouth potential to four! Doug Jr. is five, and second running Brad is two. Between Mac and his older brother Jim '39, it is conceivable that they'll have six sons at Dartmouth at one time.
Although I heard from Mac less than 10 days after the big event, he was calm enough to mention seeing quite a bit of Sam Coombs and John Bird.
Have heard that the old forester, Bob Hyde, is now down in Pensacola, Florida. Bill Jacoby has been named General Manager of the Canadian Linen Cos. Ltd. in Edmonton, Alta, Canada.. .. Dr. Frank Reilly is specializing in neurosurgery at the Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn.... Durand Allen is branch manager of Ditto, Inc., up in Gary, Indiana. That Ditto outfit has got an outstanding sales force, and Durand's position is a great compliment to him. .. . Bob Eshbaugh is down in Ocala, Florida with the Florida Telephone Co.... Brack Hazen telling Arthur Godfrey what to do as Brand Manager of the Thomas J. Lipton Co. ... Bruno Larsen is now down in Hampton, Va., after a number of years on the West Coast... . Don Smith is an account executive with the Grey Advertising Agency in NYC and is making his home in East Orange, N. J. .. . and 01' Doc Blood is practicing in Concord, N. H.
Herb Wolff and pretty Mary Frances Davies will be married this month. Tom Close and Ardis More of Wichita, Kansas, should be man and wife by the time you read this. Tom is office manager for the Twin State Sand and Gravel Co. in West Lebanon, N. H.
Please keep the Alumni Fund in mind . .. and help to make this the year that '44 shines. Hope that you all have a fine summer ... and if you do anything particularly raucous, kindly let me know so that we can start the fall season with a full column.
