Another host of newsy letters and the startling realization that many of our throng are doing other things besides taking the "line of least resistance" and acquiescing to some beautiful female, and this prompts us to mention the activities of you "doers."
Bill Roberts recently completed the fivemonth Officers Training course at Quantico, and was at last report a second louy assigned to Quantico for active duty. Dick Bucey was ordained early this summer in the Grace Evangelical and Reformed Church, and is now assistant pastor of Rev. Wiest's Church in Cleveland. Anyone in the Bethesda, Md., area, and in need of a doctor, can call on able Lt.(is) Howie Pearson, who is at the Naval Hospital there doing his internship.
It is also good to find Howie Fuller in this religious realm. News reports have Howie recently receiving a call from the United Congregational Church of Irondequoit, N. Y., to be their associate minister. We just can't seem to stray from the book of larnin' and this time it's a teacher we hear about. He is Don Klinck, who has received a one-year appointment to teach English at the Loomis School in Hartford, Conn. Don received the coveted Master of Arts degree from Columbia not so long ago.
It's heartening news to hear that at least one of our members will be enjoying one of those never-to-be-forgotten autumns in New England. He is Giles Hamlin, who is interning at Mary Hitchcock.
Last spring Will Wolfe and wife, Joan, received quite a spread in a feature story, "How Young Detroit Lives," in the Detroit News. Will has been keeping his hands full, and perhaps by now has received his M.A. in business and dairy science, while holding down a milk route complete with horse and wagon, and all in his father's dairy firm, Wayne Creamery. It's a day and night affair for a milkman, to say nothing of Will's studies and Joan's job in the Ford Rotunda news department. We have to hand it to those busy people.
It might be late, but we bet Peter Mann and wife, of course, are still happy over the arrival of their daughter, Melanie, arriving on the maternity track January 24. Dave Snell, sporting jg bars in the flotilla, is aboard the U.S.S.Gilbert Islands where he is the damage control assistant. While the boat was in the Boston Navy yards for repairs, Dave's wife Joanne was due for a bundle of joy - that was August, but we haven't heard the good news yet. The Snells are residing in Cambridge 'til the end of the year, so look them up.
Hurricane Edna has come and gone and we hope you Eastern lads are still hale and hearty. One friend with his feet firmly implanted in the mud is brother scribe Scott Olin '50, who never fails to bounce into a good '51er in his travels. Scott tells of seeing Al LeClair at the Alcoa offices in N.Y.C. Al's a ball of fire in the sales department. Scott also reports Parke Sickler down Philadelphia way deep in the soup - Campbell soup, that is. Did we tell you this? We should have, since we had a really fine visit with Parke and Bernie in Hanover, before they left for Philly.
We have to snicker at Dave Hilton. He's so wrapped up in figures after the Fund and all his other successful money-raising ventures (Community Chest, etc.) that when posed with the thought of a vocation, what did he choose? Accounting, of course. Dave's working out of Chicago with Arthur Anderson. He's one boy who can handle my books anytime - it seems Hilty always does a fine job. Thanks to him and all the other Agents who wrapped up another good year for the old Green. It must be paying off cuz Tuss's maullers got a well-won game to start off the season.
Bob Leavit, we hear from the underworld, will be a N.Y.C. resident soon. Bob's Riordan Sales Corp., an International Paper subsidiary, will be setting up offices in the big city. If you can climb that far up, look for Bob on the 30th floor of the Daily News Bldg. Tippling Al Karcher is credited with the fine picture of Dick McFarland, taken in the early summer during a reunion in Minneapolis. Ted Eberle managed to fly in from Peoria, 111. and all found a good research project to conduct for Eastman to make the trip possible. One thing Tuck did put across to Al is the competitive approach. He drummed up a scandal sheet for the Terrors at $1 per, which is said to be outselling Polly Adler's A House is Not a Home, which, incidentally, if you haven't read it, is the book of the month in our house. Please excuse us, Father Hodder.
At last sitting, Wes Blake was about to jump out of the Army and head for a Master's degree at the University of Colorado. Wes said Dave Stillman was at Alexandria, Va., studying for the ministry at the Episcopal Theological Seminary, while Don and Mrs.Person were stationed with their ship in Baltimore. Wes spent the summer in Greenland, mapping with the Army.
Hanover still gives us her inner secrets and it was good to hear that the following were able to spend a day or so there this past summer: Mr. and Mrs. Steve Balogh all the way from Ann Arbor, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. ArtWright from Augusta, S. C.; Mr. and Mrs.Thorwald Troll, Mr. and Mrs. Don DeGroff from Cleveland, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. ArtDavidson from Evanston, Ill.; and Ron Fuerster from far-off San Francisco, Calif.
Maybe the betrothed or "nearly so" should have a spot in the sun this month before our ramblings carry us to the end of the rope. So let's take a glance. This includes those wedded, too.
THE HAPPY THRONG The big day for Doug Gray was the twenty-first of August and the excited bride was Nancy Kinne. The place was the Navy Base Chapel at Philadelphia and their location at present is the same ... the base, not the chapel. Doug is in Intelligence and Nancy was a Vassar-goer, sheepskin received in 1953.
As noted earlier, the DeGroffs were in Hanover this past summer. The occasion was their honeymoon, which took them on a New England tour. The happy couple was married this summer — the former Mary Mitchell, alumna of St. Mary's institute. Durward and Mary are residing in Cleveland, Ohio, where the bread-winner is branch manager of the New York Selicate Book Slate Company. FloydParks and Wellesley grad Lorine Anderson were married in Larchmont, N. Y., on August 21. Floyd's going to have to do some fast talking when he wants to get away for an occasional "reunion," since Lorine is none other than a Phi Bete. Of course, Floyd is a descendant of Eleazar Wheelock, our great founder, and no doubt he can tame the shrew if necessary.
John Mitchell closed his eye and said yes to Audrey Mayer on June 12. Mitch had BillDunne standing by with water in case the ceremony was too much for him - and I suppose there were other Indians on hand. Mitch is bathing in oil with Socony-Vacuum in Utica, N. Y. Capt. Drew Mathews followed suit when he added a Mrs., Virginia Olson, to his name, at Norge, Va., on June 12. It was strictly a Marine marriage, and after a Bermuda rest, the couple returned to Marine bar- racks at Yorktown, Va.
Handsome John Giegeirich got enough nerve up to face matrimony and we should at least give much credit to Naomi Newman, the lucky lady. The wedding took place in Bellerose, N. Y. John, as you may recall, is recently returned from Germany, where he was a louey in the U. S. Army. It's man and wife for Herb Sorenson and Doris Durch. A June wedding took the couple into matrimonial bliss and home is now in Ithaca, where Herb is a fourth-year med student at Cornell. Into the light fantastic went Mary Parsons and Ralph Poritsky on August 28 in Quincy, Mass. Ralph and Mary returned to Rochester, N. Y., after the honeymoon. He is proceeding with his studies at the University of Rochester. Shirley Armstrong was successful in chasing Dave Emerson until he caught her, and so they were married in Houston, Texas. Shirley received a B.A. from Rice Institute and did advanced studies at the University of Michigan Graduate School. Dave snatched his M.A. from Michigan and is now on his Ph.D. in Ann Arbor.
Next month we'll try to give note to you "nearly so happy" men and gals. Shoot us a glad note if time permits. DAVE.
DICK McFARLAND '5I is host to two classmates visiting him in Minneapolis. Al Karcher '5I and Ted Eberle '51 got the Daiquiris.
