It was with deep satisfaction that your secretary reported in the October ALUMNI MAGAZINE that Rockford College had awarded Jimmy Bartlett the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters last June. It is with sadness that Jimmy's death on October i must now be reported. He had suffered a heart attack within the year and had been obliged to discontinue some of his many activities in his community. Jimmy will be remembered by his classmates and by his Rockford associates and friends for his natural talent for friendship. He will also be remembered for his interest and considerable ability in writing. His undergraduate service on the Aegis and Dartmouth boards foreshadowed an interest which might well have led him into a newspaper career. How Jimmy must have appreciated his Doctorate of Letters! A brief record of our classmate's principal activities will be found in the In Memoriam columns of this issue.
The following quotations from the Rockford Morning Star testify to the personal qualities which endeared Agard, as he was known in his home town, to his many friends. "Agard was one of the most genial, friendly, good-natured men I ever knew. I never knew a finer character." - The pastor of his church said, "Rockford has lost one of its finest citizens in the death of Agard Bartlett. He liked people and everyone liked him for what he stood for and what he was." The president of Rockford College said, "Agard Bartlett was a great citizen of Rockford. He gave to Rockford College particularly, and to many other community interests far more of his resources of rare mind and heart and body than most people realized." - '07's sympathy has been expressed to Mrs. Bartlett and her two daughters.
Deac Leonard's retirement from his teaching and administrative responsibilities at Medford, Mass., High School was announced last June. He is now considering what kind of retirement activity to undertake, possibly part-time teaching. Deac's son, Ed Jr. '42, received his A.M. degree from Tufts College this summer, and is currently teaching at Hanover, N. H., High School. Daughter Virginia is at home with her parents.
Farmer Cully Pierce celebrated a birthday last September 7. Your secretary is disclosing no secrets, but can report that Cully makes vague reference to the fact that three score and ten and Methuselah living for 969 years are both mentioned in a certain book. Draw your own conclusions.
Mrs. Joe McCann has reported that a new grandson arrived at her son Harry's home last March 21. Harry was a member of '34.
King McCoy's widow, Elizabeth, died in Ipswich, Mass., on March 29, where she was visiting relatives.
An informal '07 dinner was enjoyed on October 22, the eve of the Harvard-Dartmouth game, at the University Club in Boston. Those present were: Hitching, McLane,Coburn, Grebenstein, Smart, Liscomb, Cochrane, Bill Sanborn, Stevens, Niles and DickLane.
Marguerite Heneage has recently sold her home on Balch Hill where so many '07 men have been entertained through the years.
Another classmate has ended his career and made his score. And a high score it was. When Bill Minsch died in a hospital in Montclair, N. J. on October 25, his family, his commu- nity, his college and his class suffered a heavy loss. Bill's life was one of activity, of responsibility, of honors and, during his last years, of suffering. The principal events and accomplishments of his career are reported in the In Memoriam columns of this magazine. '07 men will remember him principally for his admirable personal qualities. Many will also recall that Bill roomed with Harry Blythe in Sanborn during senior year. Sam Bartlett and Ben Washburn represented '07 at the services.
