Thanks to Allan Gottschaldt '18, Dartmouth College really got on the air in South Florida prior to the weekend of November 8 and 9. Radio announcements of the meeting were made at frequent intervals and as a result several newcomers appeared on the scene.
Sunday night November 8, Bob Hage '35, fresh from the southeastern conference at Atlanta, had the opportunity to meet about 25 high school boys and their councillors for buffet supper at the home of one of the Dartmouth Club members. The delicious supper was arranged and served by a few of the Dartmouth wives. The meeting was quite informal and the boys grouped together with members of the Club schools and admissions committee and the Club officers for question-and- answer sessions about Dartmouth. After the supper Bob addressed the entire group and presented a very comprehensive picture of Dartmouth. As one boy said as he left, "It sounds like Utopia."
Monday morning we routed Bob out early because of a scheduled meeting in Palm Beach, where we, through the capable help of Frank Valier '39, met a group of Palm Beach High boys.
On the return trip to Miami we stopped in to chat with the principal of Sea Crest High at Delray and also saw George Boughton '28. Then we had another stop at Ft. Lauderdale, where Larry Bailey '44 had arranged for us to meet a boy at Broward County High.
The result of our weekend effort was evidenced by the number of applications received to date.
Monday night the Club held a dinner at the Seven Seas Restaurant. About twenty members were present and once more poor Bob was called upon to bear the brunt of the evening. Quite a discussion developed about the aims of the College with its selective entrance procedure. However, that matter was very capably handled by the speaker.
As we go into our winter-season many visitors land in our midst and we hope that they will contact Alex Youngerman, our president, in order that they may join us in any meetings which may be scheduled.
