Thanks to the prodigious efforts of a committee consisting of Bob McElwain '4O, chairman, Abe Cohen '27, and Wes Dunaway '43 17 hardy Dartmouth Indians and their wives took to the sea Saturday evening, March 28. Aboard the deep sea charter boat Americana out of Ft. Lauderdale were Ed Freeman '35, Allan Gottschaldt '18, Gus Pratt '44, Chuck Garnsey '20, Wes Dunaway '43, Abe Cohen '27, Tom Ballantine '40, Don Schott '40, Ed Jones '24, George Eady '43, Mike Kantzler '38, Win Proctor '24, Alex Youngerman '21, Ed Valier '34, Dave Dance '40, Frank Nelson '26.
Along about 7:00 mess call was sounded and a delicious chicken dinner was served in relays made necessary by the limited facilities of the galley. However, it was not long before all of the gang had first, second and even third helpings. Wes Dunaway provided an album of Dartmouth Song records which were on the ship's PA system, then later some close harmony was the order of the day. The air was a wee bit chilly after sundown but the moon was almost full and the sea was very calm. In spite of the chill most of the gang were able to keep warm by various and sundry means. The cruise took us south from Ft. Lauderdale to almost the south end of Miami Beach and it was a very wonderful sight after dark, inasmuch as we were quite close in shore and were able to pick out all of the landmarks.
Again it must be added with regret that more members of the Club did not join the hardy mariners because as the saying goes, "The more the merrier."
