Well, here we go again! Light up your pipes, settle back, and see if your scribe can clue you in on any more doings of the Class of '51. Spring must be rushing in out Hanover way, least in Minneapolis it's beginning to be sloppy and wet. However, it will all be worth it once spring and summer do come.
A flash in from New York tells us that classmate Sel Atherton has been promoted to an assistant treasurer of the Manufacturers Trust Co., of N.Y.C. Sel has been with Manufacturers Trust since graduating from Dartmouth, but furthered his business learning with special courses taken at New York University and the American Institute of Banking. At the moment, Sel is assigned to the Domestic Department in the bank's main office, and his territory includes the New England states. Our heartiest congratulations! Another scoop from the business world has it that Bill Hatpin has joined Oxford University Press as a college traveler. After leaving the Hanover Plain, Bill turned into an Air Force navigator. He served in Okinawa during the Korean war.
A nice letter in from Hank Nachman brings us up to date on a few more of the clan. HowiePhillips, according to Hank, is in his second year at Harvard Law, after a hitch in the Navy. He has just become engaged to a "charming Wellesley senior" who comes from Atlanta. Hank says Don Dworkin is interning at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, but expects to go in the service in June. As for Hank himself, after returning from Korea, he decided to finish his second year at Tuck. Since his graduation last June, he's been with Colgate-Palmolive, livening up the toilet articles merchandising division. A big handshake should go from us all to Ed Lathem of old Hanover, who was recently elected to the board of trustees of the New Hampshire Historical Society. Ed is serving as director of the Division of Special Collections of the Dartmouth College Library. Besides holding his Dartmouth and Columbia degrees, Ed is also a graduate of the Harvard-Radcliffe Institute in Historical and Archival Management and of the American University's Institute on the Preservation and Administration of Archives.
We've had news of two more '51 fathers. Aldan and Sue Markson announce the arrival on December 6 of Emily Amelia in San Francisco, Calif. According to our notes, Aldan is stationed at the Presidio, in San Francisco. And from Murray Hill, N. J., Dave and SusanSaxton shout the news of the December 23rd arrival of Susan Irene Saxton. Besides writing that he's sold on daughters, Dave reports that he is now an investment broker on Wall Street, with G. A. Saxton & Co. Al Crehan is stationed at Chitose Air Base in Japan. His tour of duty is for three years, and by now we hope that wife Bernadine and baby daughter Susan have joined him. By now, too, the Crehans should have an extra deduction added to the family, as the expected arrival was the end of January.
And here is the official word of the HowiePhillips-Ellen Birk engagement. A July wedding is planned, and at the moment, Ellen is busy finishing her senior year at Wellesley, as well as being president of her senior class. Please bear with us for just realizing that we have reported this one before. Excuses, excuses, excuses! Here's another doctor-nurse combination. Miss Sharon Brockway, of Grand Rapids, Mich., has said she will to Dr. JohnBrennan. Sharon attended Aquinas College and Georgetown University School of Nursing, graduating in 1954 with both her BS and RN degrees. John graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine, and is now interning at Boston City Hospital. And Miss Sandra Shoults will become the bride of Dr. David White in July. Sandra is from Wyoming, Ohio, and is now a junior in the College for Women of the University of Pennsylvania. Dave is a graduate of Tufts Medical School, and is now serving his internship at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. AndrewDrury and Verna Gove will be married in September. After attending Dartmouth, Andy was graduated from Emerson College, and then received his Master's degree in history from Boston University. Andy is now a member of the faculty of Kents Hill School, where his fiancee is also on the teaching staff.
Gordy Williams and his wife, we hear, were lucky enough to have roared in to Hanover from Detroit, Mich., on January 25. Congratulations to Ray Lindquist, who, as a sales representative for Johns Manville Building Division at Cleveland, Ohio, was recently graduated from an advanced training course in modern sales techniques at the Manville, N. J., plant. We haven't heard many of the details, but we know Ray is married and has a son, who we certainly hope can throw a ball by now.
We were tickled to hear of love riding the ski slopes of Cortina, and happy to hear that by now Brooks Dodge has married his sweetheart, Ann Schafer, of Washington, D. C. Ann went to Smith, but apparently, they did not meet until several years back at North Conway. After quite a career on skis, Brooks will give it all up for a career in civil engineering. In fact, at 27 years old, he was the oldest member of the U. S. Olympic ski team. As we understand it, Brooks is still stationed in Germany with the U. S. Army. As you know, Brookie came in fourth in the slalom, and was the first U. S. skier to place so high in any Olympic ski competition this year.
OUR FIFTH REUNION WILL BE HELD IN JUNE, 1957. We've had a great many letters requesting the dates of the 5th Reunion from those thinking it was this year. However, due to the revised schedules of reunions enabling us to gather with the classes next to us, we will not meet until one year late, or June 1957. Your executive committee and reunion committee will be gathering shortly to get the ball rolling for the big event. If there is any way that you can possibly plan to come, do so. Please place your orders now for steins, beer mugs, decanters, and plastic stomach liners. Off to the races now. See you next month.
