I SENT MY CHECK TO THE ALUMNIFUND - HAVE YOU? DO IT TODAY!!
Last month we promised a full-blown re- count of any and all tales we could dig up about our scattered brethren. While we don't like to bring undue focus to happenings and events probably already overemphasized by many far more scandalous columns than ours, we were quite taken aback on March 8 when on opening the evening paper, we spotted Abdul Sheikh in full portrait.
Abdul was gazing at Claire Kelly, a New York society gal who had apparently forsaken Abdul for Ali Kahn. We'll take Abdul any day, and certainly hope all works out for the best.
Our call for scribbles from you other silent or "super correspondents" worked a wave of news, but during the summer we'd like to hear from each of you. Dick Mason heard Uncle Sam was close on his heels, so he picked up bag and baggage and headed for Tampa for a short rest, a few fat cigars, a little drink, and anything else that might happen to saunter by. Dick reported in April 1, and said if he finished basic we'd hear from him again- here's hoping.
News just off the wire from the Chow Mein country is that 2nd Lt. John Bransten is now a comptroller at the 406 th Medical General Laboratory at Camp Tokyo, Japan. The source of information which, of course, is a pretty Geisha girl reports John to be getting extremely adept with his chop stick. John entered the service in August, 1953, so he should be about half way to his release.
All we know about Paul McLaughlin is that he was up visiting friends in Waterville, Maine, recently. The friend's father is the chief of police, so we're sure Paul's record is clean.
March was another month of prize-winning for Brookie Dodge. In the Giant Slalom, Brookie finished second, and in the National Slalom, he walked off with another second.
TURNING THE CORNER. ... It's good news to hear that another small handful declared their intentions of matrimony. Congratulations are in store for them all. Eugenie Marilyn Caldwell said yes to Justin Smith's proposal and all eyes are on July, for that's the wedding month. After his duty in the Air Force, Justin moved in with Seymour Smith & Son, Inc. of Oakville, Conn. Eugenie is a mem: ber of the Mountainside Hospital, Montclair, N. J., and grabbed her pigskin from Keuka College, Keuka, N. Y. The happy bride-to-be hails from Waterbury, N. Y. Carol Whitehall was lucky to have Al Moses chase her until she caught him. Carol calls Scarsdale, N. Y., home and graduated last June from Vassar. She is teaching at the New York School of Nursing. Al is now sporting his ensign bars.
We saw quite a picture of Harriet Serlick in the paper the other day and from the looks of it, Dick Kahn got himself a very pretty prospective bride. Harriet is assistant to the librarian at Northwestern University. As you no doubt know, Dick graduated from Harvard Medical School in June. Moving in fast as prospective bridegroom is Adolph Berger in June. Brooklyn is the home of Helene Reiback, Adolph's bride-to-be, although her schooling is being finished up at Barnard College. Ady is now with Towanda Silk Corp.
DOWN THE STRETCH.... Last month we raised a stein for Bill Pardee and his fiancee, Janet Companion (no relation to Woman's Home Companion); well, don't put down that stein, raise it again, because March 5 saw this young couple married. Auburn, Maine, was the site of the ceremony and DonSnell stood by as usher extraordinaire. Janet matriculated at Clark University as men- tioned previously. Bill, of course, is with the National Shawmut Bank of Boston.
March 1 saw the marriage of Al Markson to Susan Nagleberg of New York City. Susan wasn't satisfied with her diploma from Barnard College, consequently, she's working on a law degree at Yale at this moment. Al is with Quartermaster at Fort Lee, Va. The "Moon" saw them on a motor trip through Pennsylvania and Virginia.
We were pleased to hear of George Dimon's engagement to Kristiana Breidfgord of Reykjavik, Iceland. She is now acting with the Reykjavik Society of Actors. As most of you know, George graduated from the Naval Academy in 1952 and is now an all-weather jet interceptor pilot at Presque Isle Air Force Base, Maine. A spring wedding is planned - do they have spring in Iceland? and when would it be?
MISCELLANY.... We feel flattered but are not yet conceited enough to believe that Mr.and Mrs. Joe Borssy's brand new baby girl born March 9 and named Leslie was an outgrowth of yours truly's name. Anyway, Congrats to two lucky people - there's no business like the child business!
We were interested to hear that WilsonCross 'is in the sales planning department of Riegel Paper Corp. headquartered N.Y.C.
Who would possibly guess that the Trans-Arctic Group of the Army would be stationed in the sunny South? Well, it is, and at Ft. Eustis Va., to be exact, and with it is our WesBlake'. Lt. (jg) Roy Ireland is on board the u.s.S Fitch out on the wide Atlantic. We can't find Stayner, Ontario, on our map, but that's where Fergy Thiel is now in care of Ceneral Delivery. We're curious — what are vou doing up there, Fergy? Dick McFarland returned recently from a little schussing in gay Aspen, Colo.
Berl Bernhard, we hear, is suffering from low pay, but enjoying his work very much as legal assistant to our former Minnesota Governor and now District Court Judge Luther Youngdahl. At last word, Berl and Janice were awaiting the arrival of a wee one.
We hate to move Ed Lander out of his proper place in the column, but we sure want to get his news on board this month. Ed was married December 19 to Sandra Shoket of Chestnut Hills, Mass. Ed is interning at the Boston City Hospital along with Jim Cavanaugh and Stan van den Noort, and has also seen Paul Simel, who is now a fourth-year med man at B.U.
Johnny Sargent is sporting another lovely daughter as of last October 27. Congratulations, Sargents! Also just in is news of AlDavidson's marriage to Ellie Shaw last fall in Evanston, Ill. Some of this news doesn't catch us as soon as it could if you activity boys would get on the beam and write.
By now, one of those rip-roaring class agents has been screaming and puffing at your front door - or has had you face down in a spring mud hole squeezing bills for our great cause. Gary and Company are working for a full house this year, and from what we gather, the start looks impressive. Don't forget that when the bell rings and the game is over, you '51ers should and will be right up there on top. Send your check today. DAVE.
