You can readily see from the picture on page 78 that your officers were in there pitching for you and doing a little pre-sell for the biggest reunion to come down the pike. The occasion was the Annual Alumni Officers' weekend in Hanover. Andy Murtha and Dave Weld got every reunion detail nailed down, with the Inn for the buffet supper Friday night, with Fairlee Inn for our Saturday outing and banquet, and with the Administration, through Sid Hayward and Mike McGean in the Secretary's Office. The latter have been really great to '46. They are bending over backward to give our class everything needed for a successful reunion. Now we have to come through and prove our potential. We have been gradually, these past five years, shaking the cobwebs out and with Aud Brindley's proposed slate of able candidates for the new officers, the next five years ought to see a really terrific class emerge from the chaotic maverick group that we have been.
WHAT WE LEARNED AND DID AT ALUMNI OFFICERS' WEEKEND, MAY 4 AND 5:
1. Attended a mass meeting of all officers and wives in Commons to hear first hand reports on Trustees Planning Committee on the future of Dartmouth, dormitory plans, educational projects and Eddie Chamberlain's most reassuring report on the Class of 1960. '46 was in loud, strong evidence and we got a big hand.
2. Informal meeting of 1946, 1944, 1948, 1945 at Keene's out in Etna. Much useful info was exchanged with contemporaries, ideas were sent up and down the pole, and our perspective was brought back into focus. For instance, Jack Whitman jolted Andy Murtha, Dave Weld and me with a recent misunderstanding by a classmate in the mailings. He thought a College "Hanover Holiday" mailing referred to our Reunion. He said he'd go but he and his wife would skip those lectures! Immediately we showed our third big mailing piece which you have by now, and we put together another Newsletter. You can't take a chance. We want everyone to get the right word. Bob Kimball opened up that treasury with a report to Andy so that we can assure you comforts and quality in everything we do at our 10th.
3. Saturday Morning - Reunion Officers had separate meeting at the Inn; Treasurers met in Sanborn House; Bob gave 'em the word about our outlandish number of delinquents; Agents met in Baker, and Jack sent some big growls out about counting men who spent only a few months at Dartmouth and yet we still have to have them reluctantly (on their part) on our class roster. Jack is trying to clean the list down to all of us who have consistently shown interest. If we ever get it through, our class will number a realistic 780 men. Secretaries met in Sanborn, an excellent panel discussion was held, good advice for Class Officer selection was heard, a thorough report on the ALUMNI MAGAZINE was given us, and one special project was urged, which we should do, and that is, put out a class directory. At our meeting I plan to stress this and get it underway.
4. Saturday afternoon we had an informal picnic meeting with several other surrounding classes.
5. Saturday night big dinner meeting where we heard Coach Blackman give an excellent talk; things are moving the Big Green's way at last. Dean McDonald was socko with reports of the trials of a fßrace '56 gave us a look at undergrad life. Then we met with Mike McGean and tightened up aĺ details. And here's the important point: -
We felt that it would be a terrific idea to get Presidnt Dickey over for a few minutes to our Class Meeting in McNutt on the Saturday morning of Reunion. I am writing him now to invite him. It is my reeling, after this past five years of talking with you guys, that meeting with the President would be most helpful to us to help inspire us to become a great class. I know you have questions would like answered and you should ask them. If President Dickey will be able to attend, we will be honored and should get something of value from
Have you seen Sonny Thomas on TV? He just had a very nice write-up in his home town paper down in Princeton. He and Tay really have had some trips, their flying experiences are spine chilling. Sonny has a book coming out next fall called, Flight to Adventure, from what I glean from the advances it should be a knockout. Here's good news: Dean Warren, now a doctor, received a $30,000 grant from the John and Mary Markle Foundation. He is an instructor now at University of Virginia Med School. He won this in a competition with other physicians, scoring the highest grades. Congratulations. Dean is married to the former Eileen Dukeshire of Westfield, Mass. They are living in Charlottesville, Va.
Headline, "EX-FBI MAN TO CHECK BOOKIE PHONES," so reads the news and suddenly we find out that our own Paul Breslin is about to put the arm on the hoss men. Paul was with the FBI for five years in Cleveland and New York; now he is with Albert Heinus Special Investigator in Providence. Bob Hailer was just made assistant to the advertising manager of the Kendall Company. He has been responsible for the development of a non-woven fabric called "Webril" which has a range of uses from diapers to caskets, literally from the cradle to the grave.
Bob Hooper is seeking reelection to the school committee in Manchester, Mass. Good to see the young men getting in there to do a job on our most needy area. Bob McDonald now an attorney in Andover, Mass., has just been named an assistant to the D.A. in Lawrence. Bob did Law School at B. U.
Al Schlosser is married. Terrific, great news, congratulations. Al married the former Mary Sue Woody in Chicago. They h-mooned in the South and will live in Chicago where Al is manager of Bauer and Black's hospital division. Get back to reunion, Schlossers, don't use up all that vacation. Jim Felter wrote me about his fabulous wedding in Switzerland and a continental wedding trip. He and his bride are now back in Aden in the oil business. Reunion will be a little tough for the Felters but never count out an oil man. AI Martin is teaching at Rutland High School and receiving all Skidmore girls on the tour across Pico to Dartmouth. KnoxPhagan left the Chemical Corn Bank to become a general partner in the Brokerage firm of LaGrange & Co. Our congratulations, Knox. We are counting on you and Tony for the Tenth. Walt Snickenberger is winding up his "8 speeds forward" Mercury to return to Hanover with Mary and their boys.
Susanna and Robert Goldman proudly announce the birth of their son, Jeffrey Stuart, born on February 28.
Reunion
It is without question going to be worth the effort. Andy and Dave spared nothing to give it tone, quality, fun, in short, the works. The gang is coming back with their wives. We have a terrific uniform being made up for us through Saul Nirenberg, and decorated by the '46 artist Doug Leigh. Saul is going all out to do it right and at the right price. Talked to Ted Fajen on the LD wire couple nights ago and he is extending a tremendous deal in good Milwaukee Beer. He already has a buck a case saving, and he is going for more. This is what makes a '46 get-together a real occasion. The Inn is all set to do up a top drawer buffet Friday. Lake Fairlee is geared for a full outing. Dave has the best in hooch coming in at rock bottom rates. Music, signs, and a special map of the College for all, prepared by Doug Leigh and Andy. Be there Man! (and wife).
