Dear Gang - summer is over but the mail bag is full and football spirit is in the air. Let's go with some news -
WAIT HOO WAH - Bill Graulty has been appointed Assistant Vice President in the Trust Department of the Connecticut Bank and Trust Company up in Hartford. Hank Kruschwitz has been made Manager of Technical Services for Metal Hydrides, Inc. of Beverly, Mass. Hank has been with the company for the past nine years. The Lux Clock Manufacturing up in Waterbury has named Paul Lux, executive vice president and a director of the company. Paul, whom a lot of you will remember as one of the best swimmers in our class, has been with the company since 1946 following three years as an officer in the Air Force. Most of Paul's work has been in the sales end of the business. Dick Wilson has returned to Barre, Vt., where he has been named vice president in charge of sales for the Rock of Ages granite people. Dick had been Ohio District Sales Manager working out of Cambridge, Ohio. Dick used to see our old friend Johnny McClellan when he was there but obviously is happy on his return to his home town.
Maury Smith has been appointed a member of the teaching staff of the Junior-Senior High Schools by the Board of Education in Wilton, Conn. Smithy, after receiving his Masters Degree at the University of Michigan in music, spent four years in Hawaii teaching and coaching at the Punahou School and also spent time at the Governor Dummer Academy and at Monson Academy. Dr. Joe Kepes has opened offices for the practice of plastic, reconstructive and maxillofacial surgery (wow!) at 15 Prince St. up in Rochester, N. Y. Bill "Dusty" DeStefano (the old center fielder) in June was elected principal of Chester High School in Chester, Vt. Bill and Alice moved on August 15 and are happy to be near Hanover again. You can address them on North Street, Chester Depot, Vt. Bob Sandoe, who has been teaching at the American School in Manila for the last year, has been elected headmaster effective Feb. 1959 - this is quite a boost up the ladder for one so young as Bob. The school is for children of American and British families located in the Philippines for business and industry, Army and Navy families and Embassy children of all countries. Bill and Nancy have three children - two boys and a girl.
Provident Life & Accident Insurance Company has named Ted Seiler, Assistant Division Manager of the Chicago Group Office of that company. Ted entered insurance in 1952 after some time in the teaching profession. Dave is a graduate of Annapolis and spent three years on destroyers and submarines before coming back to Dartmouth Med School and then going on to the University of Cincinnati Med School; he and the former Mary Haskell of Stamford, Conn., have three boys and will be living at 347 Cornelia St. in Plattsburg. "Old Red Head" Pete Fahey, assistant trust officer of the Fairfield County Trust Co. in Stamford, Conn., graduated in August from the Special Trust Course of the Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N. From Hartford, Conn., comes news that Ed Lane-Reticker has been appointed director of research by the Connecticut Public Expenditure Council. Ed had been teaching law at the University of North Carolina before joining the Council two years ago. Jim Dolby, who is administrative engineering statistician for G.E. in Schenectady recently presented a paper at the 12th annual convention of the American Society for Quality Control. Jim has a Masters Degree from Wesleyan in statistics and is quite an authority in his field. Homer "Doc" Chaney, who now has an official Ph.D. to go along with the nickname, is teaching at Stanford University in Palo Alto and has two little ones. Incidentally, Doc's father, Homer Sr., 2nd Vice President of the New England Mutual Life, happens to be yours truly's "boss."
Recently the Boston Herald ran quite an article on the automobile business and its sales field. Subject of the article was our own Billy Riley, who is one of Boston and America's top automobile salesmen. Working for Cadillac-Oldsmobile Company of Boston since 1949, Bill set some kind of record when he sold 275 automobiles in 1955. He has been selling at least 200 cars per year for the last six or seven years and feels extremely confident of the future of the automobile business and his sales. Bill is quoted as saying there are still plenty of people to buy automobiles even in recession times if the salesman will go after them and use organized sales methods. His use of direct mail and the telephone in addition to friends who "bird-dog" for him, keep Billy supplied with plenty of prospects. He also says that nearly 75% of his business comes from previous Oldsmobile owners. Bill and Bev live in Medford and have three children, two boys and a girl and naturally Bill Jr. is planning on Dartmouth and emulation of his dad on the hockey rink.
Bill Schulting reports - I wish we had more guys who would send along news like our erstwhile Head Class Agent. He writes the following dope: Ted Micklin is living in Philadelphia and is currently on the sales force of Albert Steinber, Inc., distributors of electronic components. Ted and Dorothy have no children. Al Clain is with Dumont in Passaic and the Clains have one child. Ken Bollerman (who used to be a pretty good outfielder at Hanover) is with the Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in the Claims Department, serving the Brooklyn area. Ken and Kathryn have one son, Michael, age five. Federal Pacific Electric Co. is the employer of Newt Rutter who sells in lower New York and Northern New Jersey. Newt and wife have two boys. Steve Ehrlich is with RayCo in the main office in Paterson, N. J., in the Comptroller's office. Steve and Cipora have one son, Charles. Fritz Lothman writes Bill that he is in San Francisco. Fritz and Dottie have five children, four girls and a boy ranging in ages from 10 down to 1 and have moved eleven times, all over the country, during their eleven years of marriage. Fritz got together with Harry Colmery recently. Harry and wife, Sally, are now living in Frisco, having moved up from L. A. The Colmerys have one child. We would like to know more about his and Fritz's business activities. Fritz also reports that Frank Gaylord, who lived only a couple of blocks from him, was in South America for awhile this past summer and is in the insurance business in personnel training. Bob Lytel is also in Fritz's area but they have not been able to make a contact yet. The last report from Bill brings a letter from Tony Brackett, who is in the University Seminary in Ottawa, Canada. Tony, in another year will be ordained to the Catholic Priesthood in the Diocese of Burlington, Vt., and will be living in that area after his ordination. Freddy Carpenter is back in Verona and as you know, Bill Schulting is in the insurance and real estate business in Passaic, N. J., operating under the name of Cullen-Schulting, Inc. Thanks for the news, Bill!
We have run out of space, gang, so that's about it - see you next month!
