"Old Honker" Andy Carstensen '45 blew into Dayton the other day and we were able to get together for a few brews. Andy is now V.P. & Sales Manager for The Flood Company in Cleveland, makers of paint additives and rust-proofing materials and covers this part of the country in dealing with his company's manufacturer's representatives. Andy had both some good news and bad. He reported seeing Spence and Lois Smith in Chicago from time to time. Spence is in a sales capacity for Weyerhauser Timber. He also reported Sam Johnson is in Buffalo and doing a good job for the Royal-McBee Company and that Jack Flanagan is in Tucson in the building supply business. Andy did bring us some sad news and we are sorry to report to you that Jack Marlette's nine-yearold daughter passed away recently after a very short illness. Jack and Rosie —please accept our heartfelt sympathy in your tragic loss.
Publicity Hounds - Dr. Mike Stein made the papers last month in a very interesting article about research being conducted at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Mike is directing a study at Beth Israel under a National Tuberculosis Association sponsorship and is evidently an authority in his field. The particular research involved is concerned with the strengthening of the lungs in older people. Evidently respiratory muscles use more oxygen to do their tasks as a person grows older and as a result this makes for interference with normal functions of other organs of the body including the heart. The study seeks to discover how medications affecting the blood vessels, muscles and heart can slow down or even reverse the aging process in the human lung. Among other things Mike and his associates are working with the Age Center of New England in Boston to try and learn what goes on in aging lungs. Mike is living in Newton Centre with his wife, Pauline and their two daughters and expects to move soon to the Oak Hill section of Newton before the arrival of their third child Dick Bowser has become a partner in the State Street Research & Management Company, investment managers for State Street Investment Corp. and Harvard College.
