REUNION - JUNE 14-16 - REUNION
I have just received a report from Don McCree, our reunion chairman, and it looks like we will have a record turnout with over 200 adults committed at this point. If you are wavering, make up your mind right now and take advantage of a fine weekend in Hanover.
A December 22 article in The New YorkTimes under the byline of Chris Wren announced that "Soviet to Let Americans Climb its 3d Tallest Peak." Among the team organizers is Dr. Sam Silverstein. Sam, who is a physician and associate professor at Rockefeller University in New York, is in charge of the medical aspects of the trip. He has had considerable mountain climbing experience and has climbed in Antarctica and on 20,320 foot Mount McKinley. The climbers are the first Americans allowed to undertake a major climb in the Soviet Union. They will climb the 23,405 foot Lenin Peak, as part of an international mountaineering camp planned for July and August in the "Glade of the Edelweiss"at 12,000 feet, between the Alai Valley and Lenin Peak in the Soviet Pamirs. This will mark the first full cooperation between Soviet and American climbers. The Soviet Union in its Pamir, Tien Shan, and Caucasian ranges has some of the most magnificent mountains in the world. Dr. John J. Hart, a Denver lawyer and past president of the American Alpine Club negotiated the project with the Soviet Mountaineering Federation over several years. The team will be headed up by Peter K. Schoening of Bothell, Wash.
A nice honor goes to Bill Cutcliffe, president of Dunn Geoscience Corp. He has been elected to the executive committee of the American Institute of Professional Geologists. The ninemember executive committee is the governing board of A.I.P.G. which is a nationwide association of geologists solely concerned with the quality of geologic practice in providing practical solutions for natural resource problems troubling the country's economy and environment. Bill's responsibilities will be for continuing the advances that the profession is making in the discovery and development of oil, gas, mineral and water resources and other advances in disposal of waste, reclamation of despoiled land, and planning for land use. Bill, after waiting in line for an hour for $5 worth of gasoline, I sure hope you come up with some oil discoveries.
Another New York Times article back on November 2 announced that Carl McCall who has been chairman of The New York Amsterdam News editorial board resigned in a conflict arising out of the black weekly's endorsement for New York City Controller of Richard Lewisohn, the Republican candidate, rather than Harrison J. Goldin of the Bronx, a Democrat.
Finishing up on the dues slips news Lt.Comdr. John Sherman writes, "My wife, Anne, and I with our three children moved to Charleston, S.C. in September. I assumed command of the Garcia (DE1040) on August 25th. Garcia was home ported in Newport R.I. but was shifted to Charleston as part of the base closures effected by Pres. Nixon. We expect to remain in Charleston for two years. Garcia is one of our newer destroyers and I'm anticipating a pleasurable tour."
The Rev. Dale Sarles writes from Juneau, Alaska, that he has "been asked to be cochaplain to the Alaska State Senate during the 1973-74 Legislative Sessions. There I enjoy the company of fellow Dartmouth alumnus Lowell Thomas Jr., a senator from the Anchorage area."
