As we '58s move into our third year as alumni, I take this opportunity to wish that the past two years have been eventful and successful ones for all and welcome back all tired, faithful readers of this column. From what I can gather, it appears we still have a great number of our tribe in the military, another good-sized segment in grad schools or holding down good jobs, and a frightening number who are married and even have '58 progeny hustling around the household.
Early this summer I made my first trip East since June of '58 and naturally made that oft-repeated trip up the Connecticut to Hanover, which was in the midst of that lethargic season just preceding Commencement. I checked in on many old friends, including a few '58s, was pleased to see that the Inn cocktail lounge was still operative, noticed that the new Med School addition was nearly completed and most impressive, and that the Hopkins Center was still a cavernous excavation.
At this point I imagine you're more anxious to know of '58 events of the past four months and names which have sprung into the news. Let's try and get through this formidable list of recent weddings:
Al Mueller and Sue Archibold of Albany. Al's working in Toledo for Owens-Illinois Glass Co. Dave Bradley and Ann Deßoma of East Walpole, N. H. Dave's still a Navy Lt.(jg) last I heard. Barry Hildebrandt and Josephine Dunn of Bronxville, N. Y. DexFaunce and Joan Kasson of Ulster, Pa., who are now living in Norwell, Mass. Dick Portland and Suzanne Hayden of Hazelton, Pa. The couple will be living in Rochester. WaltBowlby and Barbara Bond of Asbury Park, N. J. Walt's vice president of Insulating Specialties in Hillside, N. J. George Maclver and Marjorie Orr, daughter of College Trustee Dudley Orr '29 of Concord, N. H. Having recently served with the Navy, George is now associated with IBM in Hartford.
Minneapolis was the arena this summer for the wedding of Dick Stoddart and Nan Masek of Excelsior, Minn. This affair also resembled a '58 reunion with Line Mitchell there as Dick's best man, loaning his home and dock to the fracas, Joe Blake, WaltYusen, Bill Van Law and this scribe there as ushers, although I considered myself pretty useless, having ended up on crutches - victim of a bachelor party conspiracy. NatePalmer also showed up for the festivities.
Phil Livingston and Patricia Morris of Woodville, Miss. Phil's in advanced jet training at Beesville, Texas. Andy Nichols and Cornelia Grant of Wellesley, Mass. Andy completes his last year at Harvard Law School beginning this year. Dave Bathrick and Serafina Kent of Washington, D. C. Dave and his bride live in Chicago. Joel Portugal and Helen Horowitz of New York. Joel and Helen live in New York City.
Jim Riffle and Patricia Timothy of Moorestown, N. J. Dave Moss was one of Jim's ushers. Al Smith and Joan Wilkie of Lakeville, Mass. Al's a Lt.(jg) in the Coast Guard Reserve John McHugh, a third-year med student at Tufts, and Anne Hearn. Jim White, a teaching assistant at Rutgers Univ. and Ph.D. candidate in ecology, and Cynthia Will of Metuchen, N. J.
Phil Sarrel, third-year student at NYU Bellevue Med School, and Lorna Feinstein of Belle Harbor, N. Y. Bill Allyn, a Coast Guard ensign who got his master's degree from Syracuse since graduation, and Janet Jones of Syracuse.
A few engagements round out the picture of '58 marital life. Sandra Ford of Philadelphia is engaged to Dave Brock. Dave plans to enter Yale Law School after his tour of duty with the Marines. Abby Levingson of Brooklyn is engaged to Herb Swarzman, who's now at Brooklyn Law School and editor of the school paper. Georgina Blake is engaged to Dick Fries who's currently working for Cluett Peabody & Co. in Baltimore.
I have a lot more material here but let's withhold that for a month. Instead, let me remind all of you to drop me a line when you have time, let the rest of the Class know what's new with you. Also, let's hear no gripes from you guys who think I'm playing favorites in this sheet and including only '50s who are personal friends of mine. It's not so; drop me a letter or card and you'll have a write-up. Adios for now.
