I hope we have a picture or something to supplement this month's column since it's going to be pitifully short. Yet, there's enough to pad it I guess and make it reasonably interesting and somewhat nostalgic. Let's start with a few engagement notices.
Of interest to many will be class chairman Puffy Stoddart's engagement to Nan Masek of Minneapolis. Aside from letting me know that he'd recently been appointed to the rank of Naval Lt. (jg), Puffy let me in on terrific news that he's becoming a full-fledged fiance, with no strings attached. At any rate, Puffy and Nan (of that Wellesley clan) were feted during the Xmas holidays in Minneapolis by many erstwhile Twin City natives, including none other than that master legal neophyte and doer of good deeds, Line Mitchell, whom I know by experience makes a tremendous master of ceremonies. Unfortunately, due to weaknesses of my own, I was unable to be there for the engagement party, to protect the others from potential or manifest evils of their own doing. I will assume the role of grand protector in June, however, when I'll be there for the wedding.
Also to be noted are the engagements of Lt. (jg) Dave Bradley to Ann DeRoma of East Walpole, Mass., a Simmons nursing student; and that of Temple University law student Dan Pierson to Eleanor Abbott of Winchester, Mass., Skidmore class of '60.
In the wedding department we find, among others, the marriage of Carey Rhoten and Sara Ann Crew of Oak Park, Ill. Carey's with the Chicago B. F. Goodrich plant now. Likewise, Berry Corbet and Mary French of Woodstock, Vt., a student at Colorado University. Jim's a Jackson, Wyo., mountain guide and ski instructor and last June made an ascent of Mt. McKinley's famed South Face. In December, Berry gave an illustrated lecture concerning the climb to a Webster Hall audience. Berry and Mary will make their home in Jackson.
Just rounding out a few items, Dave Pratt and Bill Caley recently graduated from Marine Leadership School at Quantico where they both saw action as members of the undefeated Quantico Marine football squad. Incidentally, Dave's face showed up in the November 30 issue of Life Magazine as a part of the article on Marine officers' indoctrination. Tryg Myhren and Dan O'Hare graduated last fall from Navy OCS in Newport, R. I. Army Lt. Don Voss is now assigned to Ft. Dix where he's training basic recruits. Marine Lt. John Otis is now making solo flights at Pensacola, Fla. where he's been since last fall.
Besides thanking you for your kind indulgence this month, I'd like to remind the readers to henceforth, at least until summer, disregard Newsletter Editor Line Mitchell's Minneapolis address and send any mail to him on to: Bear Den Gulch, 3789 Woodside Road, Woodside, Calif.
Before cutting this off, let me reply briefly to all those inquiries I've had with respect to our "Class Boy" contest. Traditionally, this little guy has been the first male child born to a member of the class married after graduation. Mainly because I don't yet have time to compile all the statistics relevant to this contest we'll hold off the announcement for a short while. In the meantime, I invite all those babies who think they have a chance to submit their names, serial numbers and footprints. Naturally I prefer those who have reached their 20th birthday.
