During the hot, humid Tokyo summer, the Club caught its collective breath before another year of Dartmouth Far East activities. In early June the Club met at the Sanno Hotel to say "sayonara" to several stalwart members leaving for foreign shores. Bill Breer '57, hoppi-coated and conversant as ever in the local tongue; Gwen and Irv Clark '56, leaving Japan for a new G.E. assignment in Cincinnati; Kunio Katakura '58s, journeying to London to learn the finer points of Arabic; and Sukekatsu Ushioda '64 and Eishoku Kuroda '64, about to begin the long trek to Hanover, were among those leaving our ranks. Especially difficult were the farewells to Bill, Irv and Kunio, three of our most loyal supporters.
The new executive committee met in August to map out 1960-61 affairs: Nobu Mitsui '43, enrollment, Dave Hitchcock '50, new enrollment co-chairman, Chick Onodera '58s, new interviewing, Hartley Caldwell '23, program, Ray Dickinson '37, new treasurer, Sukemichi Ushioda, enrollment adviser, and myself. Shortly thereafter, on September 18, the Club had its first fall meeting at the Meiji Club, welcoming new members, and special guests Mr. and Mrs. Francis Cox, Treasurer of The N. Y. Times, vacationing in Tokyo. New faces in Tokyo: Clay Freeman '58, doing Underwater Demolition work for the Navy at Yokosuka; Larry Farrar '58, doing some type of clandestine Navy job in Yokohama; and Sandra and Dr. Bernie Carpender '55, just having arrived at the Navy Hospital in Yokosuka. The approximate thirty on hand, including the Gilsons, Harmons and Hoesslys, offered "bon voyages" to several more loyal Tokyo Indians leaving these shores: Lew Parker '38, en route to New York, and Nat and Ed Jones '55, on their way to Texas.
With the summer heat behind us, and the first snows on Mt. Fuji, we look ahead to another good year for Dartmouth in the Land of the Rising Sun.
